A Social Note

The Freeport-Oregon “Letter” contained an interesting social item which concerned the fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Warwick. We hasten to mention that Freeport-Oregon is now Oregonia, the railroad and post office name for the community having been different in 1879.
The Warwick’s resided some two and a half miles east of Oregonia. Some 150 persons attended the affair including the venerable mother of Mr. Warwick. Despite her 96 years she came by carriage from Hamilton early on the day of the celebration [June 11] which made it possible for five generations to be present.
A check of the ages of the persons present revealed that 25 were past 50 years of age and 16 were over sixty. Some 50 of those in attendance were named Warwick.
We mention this item as it is seldom that one of the parents of a golden wedding couple are in attendance at their celebration. The Warwick lands were to the east and north of the former Olive Branch schoolhouse on the Wilmington pike.

The Golden Cake

A Golden Cake was baked for the fiftieth wedding anniversary for Josiah and Clarissa Warwick, on it were placed fifty one-dollar gold pieces. When the celebration was over each immediate member of the family received a one-dollar gold piece from this cake as a memento of this occasion. One such one-dollar gold piece has been passed down through the family of Mr. Robert Jeffery, now residing in Oregonia, Warren County, Ohio, by whom this story is told. Mr. Robert Jeffery now resides on the farm where this celebration occurred.

Mr. Robert Jeffery is the son of Edward Jeffery and grandson of William Jeffery who married Rhoda J. Warwick, daughter of Josiah and Clarissa Wood Warwick.
