PREFACE

Although the title of the work now offered to the public, speaks with its own utility, yet the compiler thinks it incumbent upon him, to make a few prefatory observations, by way of apology for his undertaking such a work which requires more leisure, talents and legal knowledge than he can claim. Having observed for years, with regret, that, while men adequate to the task are too much engrossed in their avocations, to serve the public in this way, those who have leisure enough, have seldom sufficient abilities, to render such important services to their fellow citizens: The compiler finally concluding, "that a rush light is better than entire darkness;" and conceiving it highly important that every person concerned in the transaction of business of moment, whether private or public, should have some plain and practical guide, to which he may, on all occasions, apply for a rule or a precedent, adapted to the case; he determined to make an attempt to furnish the public with a fund of useful information of this nature.

For this purpose, forms, for civil officers and private gentlemen, of frequent use and of different construction, have been considered as important to be inserted. And to furnish them drawn with strict attention to legal requisites, in sufficient numbers and variety, interspersed with important points of legal knowledge and useful observations from the most approved compilations of a similar kind, has been attempted. How far he has succeeded in accomplishing his design, he willingly submits to the impartial judgment of his fellow citizens.

Although he is conscious, that his utmost exertions have been faithfully employed to render the work as correct, as useful, and as instructive as possible; yet, he is fearful, from the nature of the subject, as well as his limited knowledge of law, that errors in doctrine as well as in typography may have escaped his notice: - Nevertheless he indulges the hope, that even those who feel a disposition to scrutinize with severity, upon considering the nature and object of the work, and the difficulties which were inseperably con-

nected with its execution, will readily overlook those errors which have been inadvertantly or unavoidably introduced.

That the future editions may be as free from errors as a work of this nature can be; professional gentlemen and others, willing to assist in giving intelligence to the pleople and important information to the magistracy, are solicited to give the compiler information of any error, which theymay discover, that is calculated to mislead those who are unacquainted with forensic arts, or the theory and practice of conveyancing.
