This information comes mainly from their newletter "Vinton County Heritage" and is current as of July 2008. This page is not affiliated with the Vinton County Chapter. I am presenting this as a personal service to publicize their organization and their publications (maybe someone will be prompted to buy a membership or publication of theirs). Meetings:
Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month at 1:00 PM at their new home called "Alice's House", 207 S. Sugar St., McArthur, OH 45651. The public is invited to attend.
Membership info:
The cost is $12.00 per year, renewable July 1 of each year. If you want a membership card, send a stamped self-addressed envelope. The newsletter is published quarterly. Queries may be submitted to be published in the newsletter. Queries are free for members. Make your check payable to "Vinton County Historical and Genealogical Society" and mail it to the address above. For information, call Lawrence (Sonny) McWhorter at (740) 384-2467 evenings or (740) 384-6305 daytime. Mr. McWhorter is the current president of the society (2005).
Research facilities:
You can visit Alice's House when volunteers have the house open from noon until 3pm, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for viewing and research. The phone number at the house is (740) 596-0253. Other times can be arranged by calling volunteers at (740) 596-8353, (740) 596-5426, or (740) 596-4291. The society houses a collection of old records, old newspapers, spinning wheels, and an old coal burning stove from the Hamden Depot. The Homer C. Pierce Genealogical Library is the societies main collection. The original 1865 Plat book is in the Vinton County engineer's office.
