I would like to establish the family connections of the MAJOR families that were in Mercer/Van Wert co OH pre-1850. There were at least 4 brothers who were in Montgomery co OH around 1820 and in Fleming co KY before that: William MAJOR born around 1790 in Maryland, married 1. Rachel WATKINS, died in Adams co IN; David MAJOR born c 1781 in Maryland, died Nov 1847 in Van Wert co OH; James MAJOR, born around 1782 in Maryland, died 1858 in Auglaize co OH (formerly Mercer co), married Hannah WATKINS; and probably also Hamilton MAJOR (born 1791 in Maryland, died in Monroe co IA 1849 married Charity OPDYKE in Darke co OH). William, James and David would appear to be the sons of Robert MAJOR of Maryland who was in pre1800 Fleming co KY, but as yet there is no direct proof of this or a good tie in for Hamilton MAJOR. A lot of the children of these MAJORs are difficult to sort out from the Ohio partition records. If you would like to exchange information, please contact me at my email address below. Thanks

Hermann Heinrich and Anna Margaretha AUMANN TEGENKAMP immigrated from Bakum, Oldenburg, Germany to Green Creek, Effingham County, Illinois with 4 of their children in 1864. Another 3 children were born in Effingham County. Within 2 years, Clemens TEGENKAMP, age 17 immigrated, traveling on the Ship Hermann, stating his occupation as "laborer". There were also Aumanns on the ship so he may have been traveling with relatives. He also settled in Effingham County where he married Mary CLAUSING/KLAUSING/CLOSSING on August 23, 1860. Later, I have found Clemens in Van Wert County, Ohio where two of his daughters were born. I believe Clemens is buried in Allen County, Ohio. In 1878, Antony John TEGENKAMP, son of Herman and Anna, married Mary Clara DUST in Effingham County, IL. A Clemens TEGENKAMP was a witness to the wedding. The 1880 Shelby County, Illinois census (near Effingham County) lists a young Clemens TEGENKAMP as a boarder. He is making railroad ties at the time. I don't know, but suspect that this Clemens was the witness to my great grandparents wedding, just two years prior. In 1877, a Clemens TEGENKAMP married a Margaretha VONHELD in St. Clair County, Illinois. I do not know which Clemens this would be, but think it is the younger. Obviously, Clemens is the link between the Green Creek Tegenkamps and the Van Wert/Allen County Ohio Tegenkamps. Might anyone know how Clemens, the older, is connected to my great great grandparents? Also, is the young Clemens the son of Clemens and Mary CLAUSING? Any Tegenkamp information is greatly appreciated. I understand that all Tegenkamps in the US and Canada are related. Thank you.

From the 1850 Effingham County, Illinois census I found the Tegenkamp family. The name started with a "D" with illegible letters following. They had been in the US for only 4 years. Clemens TEGENKAMP was listed on this 1850 census as 3 years old, son of my great great grandfather. Thus, it seems, that he is the younger of the two Tegenkamps and probably the Clemens that witnessed his younger brother's marriage. He is probably also the one making railroad ties in Shelby County, Illinois in 1880. I am speculating that it was he who married the Von Hold woman who must have shortly died. I am still trying to find a connection between Clemens TEGENKAMP, the older, and the family of Hermann Heinrich TEGENKAMP of Green Creek, Effingham County, Illinois. Thank you.

HOFFMAN, Otto, who may be my 1/2 great uncle, lived in the town of Van Wert for 21 years. I have his death cert which shows he died on 11 Apr 1958. He died in Toledo, Lucas Co., OH @ Toledo State Hosp. of heart disease @ age 67. The DC says he was never married. He is buried at Woodland Cemetery in Van Wert. He was last treated by Dr. M. Bell. If this is my G uncle, he moved to Toledo around 1920 after divorcing his 2nd wife Nina Katherine Davis and leaving their newborn son. I believe he was employed in the auto industry as a grinder. In his young adulthood he was a tailor in Detroit. He also was missing his left eye. His father was also named Otto and his mother was the former Henriette Kuster. Does anyone remember him?
