JEREMIAH RATCLIFFE

DEATH OF JEREMIAH RATCLIFFE

A Pioneer of Ross County, Ohio, Well Known to Many People Here

We copy the following from the Scioto Gazette:

Another pioneer resident of Ross county passed away Tuesday afternoon at 9:30 o'clock in the person of Jeremiah Ratcliffe, who died at his home in Londonderry of paralysis. Mr. Ratcliffe was born just over the Ross county line in Hocking county, June 10th, 1816, and has lived within five miles of Londonderry all of his long life.

He was the son of John and Rachel (Ray) Ratcliff, who were natives of North Carolina; and who came to Ross county in 1804.

The deceased was a farmer by occupation, and followed that business for many years, and amassed a large fortune, at one time being one of the largest land owners in Liberty township.

In 1847 he married Ruth Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Brown, of Vinton county. To this union was born five children of whom George, William and Jeremiah B. are still living, and John W. and Thomas are dead.

Jeremiah Ratcliff was a sturdy old gentleman of the old school, and he was one of the best known men in the eastern part of Ross county. He was personally acquainted with almost every man, woman and child in Liberty township, and up until the last he remained a genial, jolly old man, with a pleasant word for all with whom he came in contact.

In his younger days he was a man of commanding appearance, and he retained much of his strength and vigor until paralysis laid him low.

The funeral services were held at the Ratcliff home, on Thursday, at half past one o'clock, standard time, with Rev. Joseph Thomas and Rev. Mr. Gibson officiating. Interment in Londonderry cemetery.

Note: Jeremiah Ratcliff died 13 Aug 1903.

LEROY B. RILEY

Death of Lieut. Riley

With deep regret we record the death of Lieut. LEROY B. RILEY, of this city, who fell a victim to the prevailing epidemic, on Saturday afternoon last, in the 28th year of his age. Lieut. RILEY was a printer by profession. When the war with Mexico broke out he volunteered his services, proceeded to the enemy's country, was there promoted to a Lieutenantcy [sic], and then detatched [sic] on the recruting [sic] service. When peace was concluded, he settled in this city and resumed his former occupation.

In November last, Lieut. RILEY followed to the grave, the remains of his young and amiable wife. About six months since he was reiceved [sic] into the Scott st. Methodist E. Church. He lived consistent with his profession, and died trusting in the merits of his Redeemer.

For a part of the past year, Lieut. RILEY was attached to this office, and we can speak with confidence of his intelligence, his devotion, his generous nature, and his manliness of character. In all relations, and under all circumstances, he did his duty faithfully and well.

On Sunday afternoon, after appropriate and impressive services by Dr. SAVAGE at the Methodist church, his remains were interred with Masonic honors, attended also by some of the gallant spirits who served in Mexico.

CHISTINA (COOK) RUPPEL

Chistina Cook, daughter of John George Cook and Elizabeth Shade Cook, was born in Hassen Cassel, Germany, April 22, 1849, and departed this life June 21, 1927, at the age of 78 years and 2 months.

Her parents came to America in the year 1858 when she was eight years of age and settled near Rapid Forge where they lived for some years. They afterward removed to the vicinity of Greenfield where she continued to live until her death.

She was united in marriage to John Ruppel, Nov. 8, 1871. Three sons were born to this union, two of which are living today, the youngest, Otto, passing away May 17, 1909.

She was a member of the German M.E. Church in Greenfield and remained a loyal member until its dissolution, after which she with her husband united with the First Presbyterian Church, continuing a faithful member of that church until her death.

She was of an unassuming disposition, always seeing the humorous side of life, ever ready with a joke, even during the last illness. Everyone who knew her respected and loved her.

She will be greatly missed not only by her immediate family but by a host of relatives and friends. Besides the two sons, William and Edward she leaves one grandson, Charles and two brothers, Wm. and Louis Cook, to mourn their loss.

JOHN THOMAS

Editor NEWS:

Will you please publish the following sketch of the sickness and death of J. L. Thomas, although some weeks have passed unavoidably. We desire that our many friends in Wayne county should learn some of the particulars regarding his last days:

For the last six months he had been having lung chills, then about the 20th of January he was seized with the grip which caused him to decline very rapidly. Although he had rallied through so many serious sick spells, we could not help thinking that it would be very doubtful if he lived through this one, he seemed so feeble. We could not relize that the end was so near, as he still got up and dressed with some assistance every day, and walked from the bed to his chair three or four times during the forenoon of the day he died. He often spoke of the weariness of waiting for the summons, yet with much patience he bore his afflictions, ever trusting in Jesus until the call came, then he peacefully passed away to be at rest forever.

Mr. Thomas was born in Ross county, Ohio, July 31, 1821, died, March 23, 1899. In 1843 he was married to Miss Susan M. Buckworth with whom he lived sixteen years, and who bore him five children, four of them are living. In January, 1860 he was married to Miss Louisa A. Van Buskirk of Putnam County, Mo., and to this union were born six children, two of them with the widowed mother survive him. Of his nearly four-score years, more than fifty were spent as a consistent member of the M[ethodist]. E[piscopal]. Church, many of them as exhorter and class leader. The Rev. Dr. Allen, his pastor, conducted the funeral services. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery, by his request.

[Obit info for John L. Thomas, b. 31 July 1831 in Ross Co OH, husband of Susannah Mary (Buckworth) m. 30 Nov 1843 in Chillicothe, Ross Co OH. The family eventually moved to Putnam Co, MO and then on to Boise, ID with the Howry/Howrey families.]
