RAY MATTOX

KNOCKED UNDER WHEELS - Ray Mattox (Maddux) Lost His Life at Noon - WAS GOING TO HIS WORK - Dragged for Thirty Yards and Only Gasped Once or Twice When He Died - Ray Mattox (Maddux), an employee of the Union Coal Company, attempted to board the B & O SW yard engine at the Main Street crossing this noon, with the evident intention of riding to his work at the coal yard, which is two blocks above, on the corner of Bridge and Water Streets (in Chillicothe). He had just caught fair hold of the engine when he was knocked from the step of the engine by a switch stand. He fell under the cars and the train dragged him about thirty yards, almost to the Chillicothe Ice Factory. The cars passed diagonally over the chest and cut off the right foot. He was taken from under the cars by Hugh Day and a man named Michaels, who were standing near by, and gasped once or twice for breath and died. He was a hard working young man and lived with his widowed mother (Emily Tull Maddux) on the corner of Bridge and Water Streets. The remains were placed in Bonner and Murphyճ ambulance and prepared for burial. Coroner Smith, who was at Richmond Dale, was notified, and immediately came to the city to take charge of the case.
[NB: Ray Maddux is the son of Silas Maddux and Emily Tull, grandson of Zachariah Maddux, and great-grandson of David Maddux. Silas Maddux was 21 when he died.]
