Notes for LEONARD NICHOLAS:

Leonard and Rebecca Nicholas were married on 7 November 1797 in Lewisburg, Greenbrier County West Virginia.  (Records from the LDS Church show this as their marriage date).  Leonard and Rebecca Came to America possibly in 1797.  They came from Holland but there is no direct confirmation of that as of yet.  They arrived in Pennsylvania by 1797 when Elizabeth was born a year later and moved on to Greenbrier County, Lewisburg West Virginia a few years later. 

 

The Nicholas Migration started in Europe somewhere, notably, Holland (Although I haven't seen any documentation to prove it) (Provided by the Ben F. Dixon book and notes provided by Lydia Nicholas Dixon) and the Netherlands (According to records provided by the LDS), then to United States arriving in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, and onto the west.

 

Leonard Nicholas, born 8 April 1777, Holland, died 4 July 1835 in Ohio, buried at Ackley-Bolte Cemetery, Liberty Township, Ross county Ohio.  Leonard Nicholas shows up in the 1830 census of Ross county Ohio. Leonard Nicholas' Tombstone is "broke and down" according to the Ross County Genealogical Society.

 

Rebecca Perkins, born 16 November 1779 in Holland, died 18 June 1855, in Ohio, presumably Ross county.  Rebecca is buried next to her husband Leonard and their son Leonard Nicholas II.  They are all buried at Ackley-Bolte Cemetery in Ross County Ohio.

 

Leonard and Rebecca left Holland (their country of origin is still being researched) for Pennsylvania in the late 18th century; shortly after their first child, Elizabeth, was born in Pennsylvania, they moved to Greenbriar County, West Virginia, where their other 10 children were born.

 

Leonard Nicholas owned land in Pendleton County, 180 acres Work Knob 1836. I also found him on the Greenbrier 1799 list of tithables with 1 horse and the 1805 tax list on S. River with 1 tithable and 4 horses.  He also shows up on the 1825 tax list of Jackson County Ohio.

Notes for JOHN NICHOLAS:

When John and Eleanor Nicholas settled in Burlington Junction little did they know that their last name was going to be so prolific and help settle a town and that their name would adorn buildings of business owners, that there would be a Nicholas corner and a Nicholas lake in the area that was stocked with Carp and Buffalo fish and that there was also a Nicholas bridge on the road to Clearmont Missouri was a public bridge that was named for the Nicholas family.  The Nicholas family helped to settle Burlinton Junction and were an instrumental part of the farming community of Northwest Missouri. 

 

They grew corn, raised cattle, built roads, owned businesses, and participated in public elections, serving as a County Clerk, a State Representative, a township collecter, primarily on the Republican side and one as a Populist.  They were an industrious family, growing their own food, planted and harvested their orchards, building their own houses and barns, They were bee keepers and made their own honey.  They kept and utilized horses for farm work and for travel, they were skilled builders and carpenters.  They helped to build, repair and "drag" roads.  This is a family that was very typical of this era and served in helping to create a town that is still thriving today.

 

The family served in social organizations and church organizations.  They were community leaders and assisted their neighbors with farm work.  They also helped to set up the telephone lines in Burlinton Junction.

Marriage Notes: Eleanor Graves was born to Jonathan and Ann Hinson Graves in 1801 in North Carolina.  Her family moved to Vinton County, Ohio, where she most likely met John Nicholas, her future husband.  He was born in Greenbriar County, West Virginia.  John was "an old whig, farmer, tanner, honest as a clam, made his own shoes, sugar, flax, wool, and clothing" according to Julie Zimmer, a descendant through their son Joab.  They had twelve children in all.   John and Eleanor moved to Missouri, where they died.

 

Administrators Sale:

I will sell at public sale at the late residence of John Nicholas, deceased, 3 miles southeast of Burlington Juncton on Saturday, November 8, 1879, The following described property to wit:  140 bushels of wheat in bin, 125 bushels of oats in bin, 1,200 bus. of corn in crib, 3 cows and calves, 1 yearling heifer, 47 head of hogs, and household and kitchen furniture.  TERMS --- Twelve months time on all sums over $5, with note and approved security, and interest at 10 per cent from date.  G.W. and JOSEPH NICHOLAS, Administrators.  Sale to commence at 10 a’clock a.m. (Republican Steam Print, Maryville MO)

Obituary of John Nicholas was in The Maryville paper:

 

OBITUARY- Died, at the residence near Burlington Junction, Nodaway county Mo. on Saturday August 16, 1879, JOHN NICHOLAS aged 79 years, 5 months, and 27 days. Deceased was born in Greenbrier County, Virginia on the second day of February, 1800. He moved to Ohio in 1820 and from there to Illinois in 1851, and from thence to Nodaway County, Missouri in 1870. He united with the Christian church in the twenty-first year of his age and has been a faithful and consistent member ever since. His last words to his children were “the he was prepared to go, and he was happy.” He exhorted them to meet him in that haven of rest that remaineth to the children of God. A funeral discourse was pronounced by the writer, after which his remains were followed to their last resting place until the voice of the arch angel shall awake the sleeping dead to meet the coming Lord. To the sorrowing children we can offer this consulation. He had an interest in the cross of Christ.

Notes for ELEANOR HINSON GRAVES:

Eleanor Graves (96) was born 18 Jan. 1801 in N.C., and died 9 or 10 Jan. 1879 in Missouri (or possibly Ross Co., Ohio, according to Our Book).  She married John Nicholas in 1821 in Jackson Co., Ohio.  He was a son of Leonard Nicholas and Rebecca Perkins, Dutch immigrants.  John was born 2 Feb. 1800 in Greenbrier, Va., and died 16 Aug. 1879 in Missouri.

 

All their children were born in Ohio.  All but the two of them who died in childhood went west with the rising tide of emigration, and settled in Missouri and Nebraska.  Regarding the spouses of the children, Elisha Dixon and Frances Dixon were brother and sister, both children of Joseph Dixon and Rachel Wilkinson; Emily Humphrey and Winnie Humphrey were sisters; Alcinda and Mary Colwell were sisters, and Mary M. Colwell was their cousin.  (R-3, R-19, R-102)

Obituary of Eleanor Nicholas was in the Maryville Paper:

Beyond the River - Died in Nodaway township, Nodaway County Missouri at the residence of her son John Nicholas, on Friday, January 10, 1879, Mrs. Eleanor Nicholas, aged seventy-seven years, eleven months and twenty-two days. Her disease was pneumonia. Mrs. Nicholas was born in Chatham County, North Carolina January 22, 1801. When about six years of age she moved with her parents to what was then Jackson county, Ohio - now a part of Vinton. She was married to John Nicholas on October 21, 1821. He still survives her aged seventy-nine years. They removed to Illinois in 1851 and to Nodaway county, Missouri in 1870. Mrs. Nicholas has been a faithful member of the Christian church for fifty-seven years. Truly a most excellent one of earth has fallen. Humanity has lost a friend, the church of Christ a mother in Israel, and language falls when we would speak of the loss sustained by the family of which she was a member. There loss, however is her gala; for “Blessed are the dead who die in the lord: they cease from their labors and their works to follow them” She leaves an aged husband, seven sons, two daughters, a large number of grandchildren and numerous friends to mourn her loss to them.  Dear as thou were and justly dear we will not weep for thee, One thought shall check the rising tear- It is that thou are free. Her funeral was preached on Sunday, January 12 at Ohio church, by Elder P.K. Dibble (SP?) to a large concourse of people.

This letter was submitted by Bob Mankin to the Ross Co Genealogical Soc newsletter back in 1992-1993.  There it was shortened to just include the names and places mentioned, but thought I would send the entire letter on to these lists since many of the names are from the area.  Bob included info that the John Ratcliff Sr to whom the letter was written was b1781 and d 1846.  His wife was Rachel Ray.  The writer, John Jr, was married first to Elizabeth Ratcliff (maiden name) who died in MO.  My line is thru one of the other Stretch siblings, Elizabeth who married William J Seymour in 1831 Ross co.   Spellings and abbreviations are as appear in the letter.

Landed here to take a hund and in a bout two hours I ciled two four snag bucks  I can tell you that I hav been two trips to boonvile and one trip to warsaw  Last fall I think nothing of going a hundred or two miles of [?] [?] with a wagan for I have got us to it  here is a few lines that I want you to tell Jesse Ratcliff  that a count that he left with thomas Pile(?) for ellection on george dollel  he sued on the a count dolel n suited him  he said that it wasent dwo till fall and the Squire took dowels word for it so he throwed the cost on to Pile and he paid up the remainder of tha money  So I shuld quit that sub?? N B  whn I got tha lettar that you sent tha coppey of brother Jeremiah Sertificate I examined it and I thot that it was correctley entred and whn I commenced riting this lettar I picked up the lettar that you sent the copy of tha sertificate in and I saw a mistake in it tha ? take is in the range if you sent it correctley to me you stated in your copy that it was range 21th you look again and if it is entred rite it is in range 20 and if it is in range 21 it is 6 miles from where he aimed to enter  I sh?? and surch for tha land acording to the copy that you sent to me so I must come to a close only her is our best to you all.

GEORGE NICHOLAS was born on March 18, 1806 in Greenbrier County West Virginia and died May 16, 1862 in Stark County Illinois. He married HANNAH. She was born 26 Dec 1807, and died 10 Jun 1895 in Stark County Illinois. The following is an excerpt on the untimely death of George Nicholas and his son.....

 

KILLED BY LIGHTNING

 

On Friday afternoon, the 17th instant, this section of country was visited by a severe thunder storm, with copious showers of rain, and during its continuance Mr. George Nicholas, and his youngest son, living two or three miles northeast of Wyoming, were struck by lightning and instantly killed. They were out in the field, we understand, near the dwelling, engaged in planting the seed of sugar cane, and when found were very near each other, and it is supposed that both were killed by the same shock. It is said they were seen to fall by some one near, who repaired to the spot, and the clothes of both father and son were burning. Mr. Nicholas was a farmer, and one of our most respected citizens, was 56 years of age at the time of his death, and the large turn out at the funeral was a testimonial of the respect in which he was held in the community. The funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Wyoming, on the Sunday following, the Rev. Mr. Matthew's officiating, preaching an appropriate sermon from the text, "Be ye also ready, for thou knowest not the day or the hour when the son of man cometh."
