SOCIETY'S 30TH YEAR
1973 - 2003
This year the Pike County Genealogy Society celebrated their 30th year anniversary. Genealogy is one of the world's most popular hobbies. Hundreds of millions of people around the globe are actively engaged in some form of family research. What usually starts as a simple curiosity, however, quickly grows into an obsession.
The society's first meeting, July 19, 1973 was held in Waverly by Mrs. Bernice Francis with only seven members and one visitor present. Today the society has between 100 to 200 active members located in several states. Some of Pike County's early settlers migrated west for a variety of reasons, including land grants; over-population, food and furs were more plentiful in the western states.
Over the last thirty years the society's volunteers have spent endless hours in reading microfilm records, cemeteries or gathering information by copying records by hand - before the modern day convenience of copy machine or digital cameras. In an effort to preserve and collect Pike County's history by publishing books. Thanks to the society's volunteers, today's researcher have society's records available to help locate their Pike County ancestors.
On November 8th, 2003 we celebrated with a dinner to honor the Pike County First Families. Two new members were inducted into the "First Family of Pike County" this year. Members are required to prove they descended directly from a relative living in Pike County within the time period of 1820 - 1900.
