Cemetery Walk
HISTORIC CIVIL WAR CEMETERY WALK A SUCCESS
The Pike County Genealogy and Historical Society held a historic Civil War cemetery walk at the Mound Cemetery just south of Piketon on
September 15, 2012 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Three musicians and ten actors were the entertainers and educators for the event. Approximately
100 paying guests were in attendance.
The musicians were Nancy Brabson, Boone Brabson and Sydney Beaver. Actors who portrayed the deceased historic figures were Daniel
Burkitt, Mark Hardman, Karen Vandegriff, Victor Brushart, Tom Spetnagel, Kay Jones, Edward Dickens, Cindy Hambrick, Woody Roll and Ric
McConnell. Money was taken and tickets were issued by Barbara Burkitt and Ellen Burkitt. Connie Yeager manned the water sales and other
society members were on hand to help with information and book sales. Kay Jones provided tents for the ticket, water and book sales area.
The scripts for the actors were written by Delmar Burkitt and Karen Vandegriff. Mr. Burkitt produced and directed the event.
Each actor stood at his or her grave to tell the story of the life of the deceased. All those that were portrayed were either a Civil War veteran
or a close relative of a Civil War veteran. The actors did a marvelous job in presenting their characters.
The following veterans were represented on this occasion: John D. Cutlip, Fleming Bailey, the daughter of Earl Vandegriff, John Daily, Edward
Perry Stubbs, the wife of William Dean, Samuel Kellison, the wife of Robert Carson, John Zimmerman and Edward Lucas.
John D. Cutlip was a member of the 33rd regiment of the Ohio Voluntary Infantry of the Union Army. Fleming Bailey was born in Virginia as
fought in the war as a Confederate soldier. He later moved to this area and finished his life here. Earl Vandegriff was member of the union
army and resided in the Jasper area after the war. John Daily was a member of company I of the 124th regiment of the Ohio Voluntary Infantry
as a part of the Union army. Edward Perry Stubbs was a member of the 7th regiment of the Ohio Cavalry for the Union army. William Dean
was a member of company H of the 2nd Heavy Artillery Regiment of the Ohio Volunteers for the Union army. Samuel Kellison was a musician
in company C of the 1st Regiment of the Ohio Heavy Artillery Volunteers for the Union army. Robert Carson was a also a member of
company C of the 1st Regiment of the Ohio Heavy Artillery Volunteers for the Union army. John Zimmerman was a member of the
117th Regiment of the Ohio Voluntary Infantry and fought for the Union army. Finally, Edward Lucas was a member of the 27th regiment of
the Union Colored Forces.
