Elmer E. Shoemaker , 81, of Route #4, Waverly died at 2:50 a.m. Sunday in Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, following a brief illness.
, 81, of Route #4, Waverly died at 2:50 a.m. Sunday in Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, following a brief illness. Mr. Shoemaker was a U. S. Army veteran of World War I and II, having attained the rank of Captain during the first war, and retiring as a Lt Colonel following World War II.
He was a former employee of the U. S. Government Farm Security Administration, a widely known nature and bird lover, writer and photographer for the "Purple Martin Capital News" of Girggsville, Illinois, and well known for his "Our Feather Friends" pictorial columns in the Waverly News and the Waverly Watchman.
Mr. Shoemaker held memberships in the Aurora Lodge No 48, F & A.M. in Portsmouth, and Calvary Commander No 13 KT, the Hattiesburg Consistory AAASR of F. M. in Hattiesburg, Miss, the Hamasa Temple in Meridian, Miss and Merritt Post American Legion in Waverly, and a member of the Waverly Presbyterian Church.
Born on September 16, 1892 in Scioto County, he was a son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Kush) Shoemaker.
His wife, the former Irma Hahn, preceded him in death on August 2, 1969.
Surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service are scheduled to be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Boyer Funeral Home in Waverly with Dr. Clarence Showalter and Rev. Robert L. Sayre officiating. Burial is to follow in Wheelersburg Memorial Park. Friends called after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday until the funeral hour.
A Masonic service was conducted at the funeral home at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Mr. Shoemaker was also predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.
