Charles P. Gablemam
Final Rites set Saturday for Gableman. Former Mayor and Postmaster.
Charles P. Gablemam, 83, of Waverly, former mayor and postmaster of Waverly and Pike County probate judge, died early Wednesday at the Masonic Home in Springfield.
Funeral service for Mr. Gableman will be conducted at 1:30 PM Saturday at the Waverly Methodist Church, where he was a long-time member, with Rev. Donald Morgan officiating.
Interment will be made in Evergreen Cemetery here under the direction of the A. H. Boyer Funeral Home.
Masonic service are scheduled for 7:30 PM Friday evening at the Boyer Funeral Home.
Mr. Gableman was born in Waverly, the son of Philip and Margaret (Breing) Gableman. He was married to the former Mabel Hutt who preceded him in death on July 1, 1958.
He is survived by two sons, Charles H. Gableman of Elkhart, Indiana and George M. Gableman of Alexandria, Virginia; one sister, Mrs. Janet Dee (Petrea Gableman) Gardner of Newark, Ohio and four grandchildren.
Mr. Gableman was preceded in death by five brothers, William, Edwin, George, Wesley and Walter Gableman.
He had been a member of Orient Lodge 321, F&AM in Waverly since 1900 and served the lodge as worshipful master in 1908, 1912 and 1913. Mr. Gableman was also a member of Chapter 99, Order of Eastern Star here and was a past worthy patron.
Mr. Gableman graduated from Waverly High School in the Class of 1895.
"Charlie", as he was known by local residents, received national acclaim during the long period of serving the community as Mayor when he was noticed by the late Robert L. Ripley in his "Believe It or Not" syndicated cartoon as the "Nation's Newsboy Mayor".
During the time he served as mayor, he also conducted the village's only newsstand and magazine agency, located for years on Market Street in a part of the Walter Miller Building and later in the early 1930's moving into the room now occupied by the Express Agency on East Second Street.
Charlie has several daily newspapers which he delivered to his customers on a bicycle. Ripley pictured Waverly's mayor on a "bike" making these deliveries and conducting his official duties behind a desk in the newsstand.
