Funeral services for Grover L. Oyer, 86, of 640 Buckeye St., Chillicothe, were held at 1:30 p. m. Saturday at the Ware Funeral Home in that city, with Rev. Charles Lusher officiating. Burial followed in Waverly Evergreen Cemetery. Friends called at the funeral home after 5 p. m. Friday.

Mr. Oyer died early Thursday at the Chillicothe Medical Center Hospital.

Born in 1908 in this area, he was a son of Lawrence and Elizabeth (Carney) Oyer, both of whom predeceased him.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs., Inez (Brown) Oyer at home; three sisters, Mrs. Lloyd (Mabel) Sayre of Ironton, Mrs. Clyde (Georgia) Price, and Mrs. Paul (Helen) Chaffin, both of Chillicothe; and a brother, Ralph E. Oyer of Dayton.

Mr. Oyer retired in 1970 from the Chillicothe Paper Co., with 37 years service.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and three brothers.

Frey, Esther Jane

Mrs. Esther Jane Frey died at the home of her daughter in Dayton, Ohio, August 21, 1935, aged 89 years 6 months 13 days. She was the daughter of James and Mary Margaret Kennedy and was born February 8, 1846 near Salem Center, Meigs County, Ohio.

When five years of age she, with her parents moved to Pomeroy, Ohio, where she attended school until she was fifteen years old. After graduating she began teaching (her first school charge was at Dexter in Meigs County) for which she received the sum of eighteen dollars and worked for her board in the family of an uncle while teaching at this school.

One of her schools after the Civil War ended was composed of slaves, consisting of negro men, women and their children. She taught school for seven years. Two terms were taught in Pike County, where she met Frederick Frey. They were married September 5, 1867 by the Rev. Martin Bussdicker of the U. B. Church near Waverly, where she lived until September 1926. She went to Dayton to live in the home of her daughter, Mrs. B. R. Reick.

She was converted at the age of eighteen and was an active church and Sunday school worker as long as her health permitted. She trusted the Lord and died in the faith of having a Heavenly home where she could live with her Savior and the loved ones who have gone before. Her husband preceded her in death, December 17, 1921.

Besides her daughter, Mrs. Mrgaret Reick, of Dayton, she is survived by Mrs. Mary B. Farmer, Mrs. Catherine B. Eblin, Mrs. James Frey and Mr. George Frey, all of Waverly: Charles Frey, of Columbus; a sister, Mrs. Zepp of Denver, Colorado; fourteen grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted at Dayton, August 22nd by Rev. Leroy K. Dodge and also at Waverly, August 23rd at the Bible Christian Church of which she was a member. Services here were conducted by Rev. A. O. Goff and burial was under the direction of the A. M. Gregg Company of Waverly.

We shall sleep but not forever,

There will be a glorious dawn

We shall meet to part, no never

On that resurrection morn.

Gregg Company of Waverly, for their efficient service.

Gray, George W.

We clip the following obit from the West Union Record. If the deceased was born in Waverly there must be some of the older residents still living, who remembers him. Do any of the present residents recall the old veteran? The obit is as follows:

George Washington Gray was born at Waverly, Ohio on February 7th, 1836 and departed this life April 7, 1912 aged 76 years 2 months. He was united in marriage to Mary E. Auston on February 26, 1863. To this union were born six children, five of who are living, Mrs. M. Campbell of Ft Wayne, Ind.; Mrs. Bertie Copeland of Middleton, Ohio, Mrs. Roy Piatt of Columbus, Ohio, Mrs. Carey Blain and S. T. Gray of Greenfield, Ohio with his wife, six grandchildren and a host of friends are left to mourn their loss, one daughter Hannah Elizabeth having died at the age of 10 years, just 24 years before his death. On August 15, 1861, he enlisted in the Union Army under Captain Cockerill, Co. F. First Reg. Light Artillery. He faithfully performed his duty as a private and was honorably discharged at Nashville, Tennessee on January 3, 1864. On January 4th, 1864, he re-enlisted in the same company, under Captain William Pease and served with honor to himself and country and was honorably discharged at Camp Dennison on July 22, 1865. After the war he settled near Locust Grove, Ohio near which place he resided until September 1810, when he and his wife moved to Greenfield.

Southworth, Rev. Orville

Funeral services for Reverend Orville Southworth, 87, were held 2 p.m. Monday at the Madison Freewill Baptist Church.

The Reverends Forrest Chamberlin and Tillison Greene conducted the funeral service. Internent followed in Owl Creek Cemetery.

A resident of Owl Creek Road, Lucasville, the Reverend Southworth died January 29, 1986 12:15 a.m. Saturday in Mercy Hospital, Portsmouth.

He was retired employee of the Empire Steel Corporation of Portsmouth and was a member of Local 3216 AFL-CIO, Portsmouth. He was an ordained minister for 45 years and was pastor of the Madison Freewill Baptist Church on Owl Creek Road for 15 years.

He was born July 28, 1898 in Pike County and was the son of Parker & Emma Galford Southworth. He married Myrtle Mae Rapp on August 19, 1922, who survives.

Other survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Dave (Dollie) Noel, Mrs. David (Lucille) Hannah and Mrs. Bill (Patsy) Spencer all of Lucasville; three sons, Jack & Robert of Lucasville and Ray of Piketon; 29 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.

He was proceeded by his parents, one son, one grandson, three brothers and four sisters.

Arrangements were made through the Cox Funeral Home, Beaver.

Davis, Elson

Jackson County native, Elson "Stripe" Davis, of 405 Charlotte Oak Lane, Hendersonville, North Carolina died 2 a.m. Monday at the Park Ridge Hospital, Fletcher, North Carolina. He was 61.

Born October 4, 1925, he was the son of Ora & Jennie Warren Davis. On July 30, 1950, he married the former Neva Slone, who survives.

Also surviving are two sons: Bruce, of Seattle, Washington; Keith of Clarksville, Tennessee; a daughter, Lisa of Norfolk; and a brother, Dale Davis of Sabina, Ohio.

Mr. Davis was a retired employee of J. C. Penny, with 34 years of service. He was also a World War II Navy veteran.

Funeral services will be held 2 p. m. Thursday at the Cox Funeral Home, Beaver. Interment will be made in Beaver Union Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday until the funeral hour.

Adkins, Jesse Jerome

Jesse Jerome Adkins, 70, of 10701 Southeast Highway 212, Clackamas, Oregon and a former Piketon resident, died at 7:40 p.m., Thursday in Portland, Oregon.

A retired construction worker, he was born in Wrigley, Kentucky on October 26, 1915, the son of John T. & Eva Lee Fraley Adkins.

On June 8, 1942, he married Gertrude Freshour Snyder, who survives in addition to one son, David Jerome Adkins of Clackamas, Oregon and three daughters, Miss Donna Jean Adkins at home, Mrs. Richard (Pauline) Ward of Elyria, Ohio and Dean (Laura) Alice Acord of Piketon.

Eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who survive in addition to one brother, Wrigley Adkins of South Webster and five sisters, Ruby Hurst and Mabel Speratulos, both of Johnson City, Tennessee, Wanda Foster of Kingston, Oklahoma and Reda Rhea and Geneva Rhea, both of Greenville, Tennessee.

Funeral service were held Monday at 2 p. m. at the Botkins Funeral Home in Waverly with Rev. David Schneider officiating. Burial followed in Mound Cemetery. Military graveside services were conducted by the Waverly American Legion Post 142.

YATES, Silas

Funeral service were held Monday at Cox Funeral Home in Beaver for Silas Yates, 75, of Nelson Road, Route #4, Lucasville who died Friday at 8:31 a.m. at Grant Hospital, Columbus.

Born in Lucasville, he was the son of John and Ollie Cooley Yates. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors included his wife, Virgie Nelson Adkins; nine stepchildren, Rossie, Scott, Carol Estep, Teddy Fausnaugh, Danny and William Adkins, Jr., all of Circleville, Barbara Massle of Piketon, Geneva McMurray of Califorinia, James Adkins of Mass, Arizona and Donald Adkins of Jamestown, Rhode Island.

Also surviving are five brothers and sisters, Dudley Yates of Sciotoville, Clinton Yates and Waneitha Fyer of Dayton and Emogene Black and Charlotte Gunthier of Troy; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.

The Rev. Russell Cox officiated the service. Interment was in Owl Creek Cemetery.
