Charles D. Pitts, 81, of Pike County, died Tuesday in University Hospital, Columbus.
Mr. Pitts was born November 26 in Pike County. He was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and Orient F & A M 321 Waverly.
Surviving are a daughter Barbara Smith of Columbus, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Services were this afternoon (Thursday) in Columbus. Burial was in Amanda Township Cemetery. Shoemaker Funeral Home, Columbus, handled arrangements.

SAKAL, Ruth (Lewis), 79, of Millers Lane, Waverly, died 7:35 p.m. Friday in Grant Medical Center, Columbus.
She was born September 4, 1918, in the Meadow Run Community, Waverly, to the late Herman A. and Donna (Glenn) Lewis. She was preceded in death on December 23, 1977, by her husband, Louis J. Sakal, whom she married in April of 1949.
Surviving are two brothers, Donald K. Lewis, Jasper, and Robert E. Lewis and his wife, Betty, of Waverly; one sister, Donna E. Lewis, Waverly; two nephews, Steven M. Lewis and his wife, Beverly, Waverly, and James A. Lewis and his wife, Jackie, Jasper; two nieces, Rita A. Bevens and her husband, Gordon, Waverly, and Rebecca L. Lewis, Waverly; and four great-nephews.
Mrs. Sakal was a veteran of World War II having served in the Woman’s Branch of the Marine Corps. She was a graduate of Rio Grande College and taught school for several years. She was later employed at the Joliet, Illinois Arsenal where she retired. Mrs. Sakal was a member of the United Methodist Church and the French Colony Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Gallipolis, Ohio.
Graveside services will be at the convenience of the family in Waverly Evergreen Union Cemetery, with Rev. H. Douglas Shriner officiating. Calling hours will not be observed. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Heart Fund, P. O. Box 739, Columbus, Ohio 43216-0291. Arrangements are under the Botkin Funeral Home, Waverly.

James E. Swiger, 91, of 201 S. Mullins St., Waverly, died at 2:01 a.m. Wednesday in Pike Community Hospital.
Born July 4, 1894, in Pike County, son of the late William H. and Elsie Crabtree, he was a retired farmer.
A World War II Veteran, he was a retired manager of the Pike County Farm Bureau Co-Op, and a charter member of the Farm Bureau and American Legion Post 142.
Surviving are his wife, Loraine (Brant) Swiger; one daughter, Carol Bevier of Mansfield; two sons, James of West of West Germany and Andre of Virginia; six grandsons; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Olive Dean of Piketon, and one foster brother, Albert Birkheimer of Piketon.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Howe-Wheeler Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Hancock officiating. Burial will be in Waverly Evergreen Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.

Loraine Brant Swiger, 94, of 201 South Mullen Street, Waverly, died at 4:25 am Tuesday, September 22, 1992, at Pike Community Hospital in Waverly.
Born February 16, 1898, in Lucasville, a daughter of the late Frank & Elizabeth Mershon Brant, she was previously employed by Reitz Brothers Lumber Company and the Lucasville office of Ohio Power Company, and was the former director of Brant & Appel Company of Lucasville, a 1915 graduate of Valley Township High School, and a 1924 graduate of Portsmouth College of Business.
She was a member of the Waverly First Presbyterian Church, Hospital Guild No. 9 of Pike Community Hospital, Pike County Republican Club, Pike County Farm Bureau; Mershon Association of New Jersey and Huguenot Society of Ohio and a member-at-large of the Daughters of American Revolution.
She was a charter member and officer of Pike County Genealogical Society Chapter. She wrote and published 11 books of genealogy of her own and her husband’s families, which have been placed in several leading libraries of the United States

Mrs. Ruby (Schwartz) Woods, 61, of 661 Salisbury Rd., Waverly, died Monday evening (July 23, 1984) in St. Anthony’s Hospital in Columbus.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond P. Woods, whom she married March 25, 1946.
Also surviving are two sons, Randall and Steven both of Waverly; three grand-daughters; three sisters, Mrs. Ikler (Ruth) Bastian of Athens, Mrs. Charles (June) Milstead of Washington C. H. and Mrs. Robert (Clara Jo) West of Columbus; and three brothers, Arthur Schwartz of Dayton, Robert Schwartz of Cincinnati and John Schwartz of Stone Mountain, Ga.
She is preceded in death by her parents, a son Raymond Jr., two sisters and one brother.
Mrs. Woods attended the Waverly Church of Christ in Christian Union where the funeral is set for 3 p. m. today (Thursday) with Rev. Robert Trimble officiating.
Burial will be in Waverly Evergreen.

Paul A. Detillian, 76, died May 26, 1996 at his residence.
He was born September 11, 1919 in Pike County, Ohio to Ross and Bessie Edith (Allen) Detillian.
He is survived by four daughters; Carol Montrose of New Albany, Bonnie (Robert) Reed of Pataskala, Judy Cook of Athens, Paula (Michael) Gill of Pt. Orange, Fla.; two sons; Paul (Connie) Detillian and Ralph Detillian, both of Columbus sister and brother-in-law Kathryn and Norman Speaks of Dayton, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and faithful dog, Fluffy.
Mr. Detillian retired from Rockwell International. He was a member First Families of Ohio, Lawrence and Gallia Counties.
Funeral services were held Friday at 11 a.m. in the Long Funeral Home, 5528 Cleveland Ave. Interment was in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Kingston at 1 pm.

Col. Thomas W. Higgins
Colonel Higgins, was born June 18, 1825, the second of four children of John and Parnella Higgins. His father, a native of Vermont, was a farmer and lawyer and settled in Knox County, Ohio, in 1810.
Mr. Higgins’s mother was a native of New Hampshire and died in 1831, when he was but six years old. Until his seventeenth year his time was spent alternately at the district school in winter and on the farm in summer and in 1845 entered Oberlin College, where, for several years he applied himself to good literature. In 150 he entered the law school at Ballston Spa, N. Y., and was subsequently admitted to the bar at Albany, N. Y.
He located at Buffalo, but a year later went to New York City, where he remained three years. In 1855 he went to Europe and spent a year traveling in Great Britian. In Dublin he met Miss Isabelle Wade, daughter of Samuel Wade, a prominent wool merchant of that city, and in 1856, shortly before leaving for America, they were married.
After his return to this country, he wrote ”The Crooked Elm; or, Life by the Wayside,” which met with large sale. In 1858 Mr. Higgins took up his residence in Toledo, Ohio, where he practiced law till 1860 when he removed to Waverly.
In 1871 he recruited Company B, Seventy-third Ohio Infantry, and was appointed its captain. He bore a creditable part in the battles of Cross Keys; Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Resaca, Dallas, Kenesaw Mountain, Mission Ridge, Peach Tree Creek and Atlanta, and marched with Sherman to sea. At Resaca he was wounded in the left side by a minie ball, and at the last battle in North Carolina was wounded in the head. His gallantry secured him, first, a Major’s and then Lieutenant Colonel’s commission, and a portion of his term of service he was in command of his regiment. He was mustered out in 1865.

Death of Col. Higgins
Col. Thomas W. Higgins, the oldest member of the Waverly bar, and a prominent Democratic leader, died Monday evening in his 82nd year. He had a brilliant military record and was a Colonel of the 73rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Col. Higgins, in former years was a frequent visitor to Portsmouth on political and business errands. His daughter Mrs. Aileen Kehrer was a long time resident of Sciotoville.

Death of Col. Higgins
Col. T. W. Higgins, well known in this city, and a brave member of the famous old 73rd O. V. I., died at his home in Waverly, Wednesday of a complications of diseases, at the age of 82 years. The news of the death received here with genuine regret. The funeral was held in Waverly Thursday. A number of members of the 73rd and other friends from this city attended.

Colonel Higgins Dead
Col. Thomas W. Higgins died at his home in Waverly on last Monday evening in his 82nd year. He had a brilliant military record and severed as Captain of Company B in the 73rd O. V. I. and was afterward promoted to Colonel. He served in the same regiment with Mr. E. H. Miller and others of this community who spoke in highest terms of Col. Higgins as a solider and comrade in arms, and good citizen.

Gladys L. Chalmers, 91 of Boardman, Ohio, formerly Bristol Village in Waverly, died Monday (April 26, 1998) at Sutter Davis Hospital, Davis, California.
She was born June 30, 1906, the daughter of the late Robert M. Hodam and Sadie (Mehaffie) Hodam in Downs, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Grant Chalmers, three brothers, and one sister.
Funeral services will be held 1 a.m. Tuesday at Boyer Funeral Home in Waverly with Rev. Walter Vonderohe officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Union Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

- age 98, of Pleasant Hill Manor, Piketon, OH, formerly of Latham, OH, died 2:12 p.m. Tuesday, January 27, 2004, at Pleasant Hill Manor. He was born March 3, 1905, in Wakefield, Ohio, a son of the late George B. and Nancy Jane Bennett Cutlip. In 1927 he was united in marriage to Carrie Lillian Neal, who preceded him in death in 1969.
To this union were born two sons, the late Robert Chester Cutlip, and Oliver P. "Butch" Cutlip and wife, Phyllis, of Frankfort, Ohio. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Tim and Eileen Cutlip, of Wakefield, OH, Debbie and Lonnie Fultz, of Lucasville, OH, Scott Cutlip, of Waverly, Lynne Oman, of Columbus, OH, and Chris and Lisa Cutlip, of Tennessee, nine great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren, one sister Ethel Kopp, of Arizona, and two stepchildren, Richard Mostellar, of Latham, OH, and Evelyn Houseman, of Bainbridge, Ohio.
Ted re-married in 1984 to Opal Mostellar, of Latham, OH who died in 2001. Ted worked on the N&W railroad in the GS tower in Portsmouth, OH, for forty-one years. He and his son Robert, operated a beef cattle farm for several years, later Ted went to work at the Pike County Fairgrounds, as groundskeeper. He was an avid fox hunter, a member of the Pike County Fish and Game Club and a member of Latham Christian Union Church.
Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, at Botkin Funeral Home, in Waverly with Rev. James Daulton officiating. Burial will follow in Bailey Chapel Cemetery, Wakefield, Ohio. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Botkin Funeral Home in

Funeral services for Ralph Simison, 87, of Dayton, were held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cox Funeral Home, Beaver, Ohio with the Reverend Howard Shiveley officiating.
Burial followed in Beaver Union Cemetery and military rites were conducted by the Beaver Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9942.
Mr. Simison died last week in Melbourne Memorial Hospital in Melborne, Florida.
Born in Good Hope, Ohio, he was the son of the late Hugh and Elizabeth Swan Simison. He was an Army veteran of World War I. On January 15, 1923, he married the former Bessie Chandler, who died in 1984.
Survivors include serveral nieces and nephews, six grandchildren and 11 grandchildren.

Joseph Gehres dies suddenly - Pioneer Retired Lumber Man Succumbs Saturday Morning at home, was 89 years old, was prominent in business affairs of Community; Ries held Monday.
Joseph A. Gehres, 89, prominent and well respected retired lumberman of Waverly, succumbed suddenly at his home on East North Street, shortly after 11 o'clock, Saturday morning. His heath had been gradually failing for the past month, but his death was a shock to the community.
The late Mr. Gehres was born August 9, 1855, near Kokomo Indiana, the third son of Adam & Rachel Wyatt Gehres.
At an early age he and his family settled in Pike County, where in later years he went into business with his father and three brothers in the furniture and undetaking business, and in 1881 joined his eldest brother, William in the lumber business and continued until the Spring of 1918, when he sold the business to Kelly Durham, and A. M. Kalfs, the present owner.
On June 7, 1882, he married Mary Jane Hewitt. the this union four children were born. Hewitt A., Lloyd F., , Mary W. and Irma J., one daughter Mary W., preceding her father in death.
He was a member of the Waverly Presbyterian Church.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Mary Jane Gehres, he is survived by two sons, Hewitt A., of Mt. Vernon and Lloyd F., of Jenkintown, Pa., a dauhter, Mrs. Irma J. Lorback of Waverly; two sisters, Miss Nellie Gehres and Mrs. Z. W. Davis, also of Waverly, and three grandchildren; Lieut. Freeman A. Gehres, Misses Mary Ann and Mary Jane Gehres, surviving.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the Waverly Presbyterian church with Rev. Harold Weir, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Chillicothe, officiating.
Intermant followed in Evergreen Cemetery in Waverly under the direction of A. H. Boyer, local funeral director.
Members of Mr. Gehres' Sunday School Class were the pall bearers during the final rites for this well-known and well-liked citizen.
