Hewitt A. Gehres
A Waverly native. Hewitt Adam Gehres, recently died at the age of 102. A memorial service was held at the First Prebyterian Church in Mount Vernon.
Hewitt Adam Gehres, recently died at the age of 102. A memorial service was held at the First Prebyterian Church in Mount Vernon. Reverend James Sanko officiated the service and arrangements were under the direction of the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 E. High Street, Mount Vernon.
Mr. Gehres was born March 22, 1883 in Waverly, to Joseph and Mary Jane (Hewitt) Gehres. He graduated from Waverly High School in 1891; and from The Ohio State University in 1907, with a degree in mechanical engineering. He received an honorary doctor of science degree from Grove City College, Grove City, Pennsylvania in 1950.
Mr. Gehres worked as an engineer for the Bethlehem Steel Company in 1909; was assistant chief engineer for C&G Cooper Company, 1910 -1916; chief engineer for Eastern Brass and Ingot Company, 1916-1918; chief engineer for American Wood Reduction Company, 1918 - 1920; chief engineer C&G Cooper, 1920 - 1927, director and chief engineer C&G Cooper Company, 1927 - 1929; vice present, member of board and director of engineering for Cooper-Baessemer Corporation, 1920 - 1949; executive vice president and director of engineering Cooper-Bessemer Corporation, 1948 - 1957.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Mount Vernon, the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, the American Petroleum Institute, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Mount Vernon Country Club, Rotary Club at Mount Vernon, and the Presidents Club at Ohio State University. He served on the Mount Vernon City Council 1940 - 1946. He held 25 patents plus serval joint-patents.
Mr. Gehres was an avid Ohio State football fan.
Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Leo (Irma) Lorbach, of Mount Vernon; a grand-daughter, Bina Jean Gehres, of Profidence, Rhode Island; a grandson, Hewitt Charles Gehres, of Columbus.
He was prededed in death by his wife, Phobe Grace (Freeman) Gehres, and a son, Freeman A. Gehres.
Mr. Gehres, who resided at 2 Arden Lane, Mount Vernon, died at his residence. No calling hours were held.
Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Vernon Community Trust or Interchurch Social Service.
