Friends and relatives of John J. (Jay) Slaven , of Springfield, Ill., have learned of his death May 24, (1976) following an extended illness. He and his wife Frances had for several years made an annual October visit to Ohio and Pike County.
, of Springfield, Ill., have learned of his death May 24, (1976) following an extended illness. He and his wife Frances had for several years made an annual October visit to Ohio and Pike County. Mr. Slaven was a son of the late John Slaven and a grandson of Civil War veteran and Pike County Commissioner, the late Reuben Slaven of Union Township.
He was a 40-year employee of Illinois state Journal and Register, Springfield, Illinois, before retiring in 1971. He had won three Copley Newspaper awards for newspaper promotion advertising.
A charter member of the Abe Lincoln Players, he portrayed the role of the village rowdy Jack Armstrong in "Abe Lincoln in Illinois" at New Salem State Park for many years. Bowing out from his stage role in 1959 after nearly 100 performances, he later narrated the production. He was also a past exalted ruler of the Elks Club of Springfield.
Besides his wife, the former Francis Eck of Springfield, he is survived by a nephew, James J. Trobough, Jr., of Wisconsin and several cousins among whom locally are Harriett and Malcolm Shy, Route #1, Waverly; George E. Leist, Jr., Mrs. Carl Salisbury and Mrs. Curtis Sollings, all of Route #1, Beaver.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday in St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Springfield, and burial was made in Calvary Cemetery in that city.
