Although originally only one large and one small die-cast model Norwood Police cars were to be given away, the number of prizes was increased! Two of each size of the die-cast model Norwood Police cars were donated by the maker, Rodney Steele, for the raffle. The Society donated a copy of the 2006 Mersch photo book, the 1976 book created by the students of Norwood High School and a pack of Norwood post cards. Rodney Rogers donated a copy of a book containing a series of articles from an 1887 newspaper column with illustrations and descriptions added.

A big thank you to all that made the Open House an enjoyable evening. The house was in great shape, the food and drinks were excellent and the music was top notch.

re: COLLINS ICE CREAM COMPANY
More information has been received about the Collins Ice Cream Company. K. Lehn, a great-grandaughter of Alva Bert Collins says that, according to family members, Mr. Collins was the owner and operator of the Collins Ice Cream Company in Norwood, Ohio. Previous to this, he owned the Collins Ice Cream Company (later renamed the Jamestown Ice Cream Company) in Jamestown, New York. She continued, "The Company was started by my great great grandfather in Huntington, Indiana around 1893 and branched out to Ft. Wayne, Chicago, Jamestown and finally Norwood." For other readers, the Society would appreciate any copies of advertisements or other items related to this business in Norwood.

re: BOSWORTH RADIOS
Thanks go to M. Parker from Portland, Oregon, for information on The Bosworth Electric Manufacturing Company, an apparently short-lived Norwood radio manufacturer. The catalog page, showing two models of Bosworth radios and a table to hold them, and the photos of Mr. Parker's own Model B-3 radio are very much appreciated. Copies of those documents have been placed in the Society's archives and the local Norwood branch library's Norwood historical archives. According to Mr. Parker and Norwood Directories from the 1920s, the company was located at the corner of Lexington Avenue and Main Avenue (Montgomery Road). Thanks to J. Gladish for the well-done research of the Anthony H. Overberg story. On July 8, 1942, Sergeant Overberg was killed during a robbery—the only Norwood policeman to die in the line of duty.

A: After a search of the Norwood directories from 1915-23, no listing for a company of that name was found. The only listings for ice cream manufacturers were the Norwood Ice Cream Co. and the apparently short-lived Ohio Ice Cream Co.—it was listed only in the 1919-20 directory, although it may have moved from Norwood. The Norwood Chamber of Commerce's 116th Norwood Day Parade was a great success again. We congratulate the Chamber on a well-organized and enjoyable celebration of Norwood's organizations and people. The weather was agreeable, especially considering the harsh storm we had last night — tree limbs were down everywhere, and power was off for Montgomery Road and even City Hall. Fortunately, everything was okay on the Pike for the parade.

The Society's entry was number 45. The driver, who also supplied the vehicle, is our own Treasurer. Riding inside was his mother (a long-time Norwood resident) and a past President. On the outside was one of the Curators and the current President. The traditional Norwood Historical Society banner was displayed on the front of the vehicle, special made signs were on both sides and, on the reviewing stand side, was an enlarged photo of a die-cast Norwood Police Car with raffle information on a separate poster.

If you missed the parade, check it out on the Norwood Cable Public Access channel. Mention was made of the Society's 30th Anniversary, the monthly meetings at Linder Park and the raffle for the die-cast cars to be given away at the December Open House.

It was reported at the July meeting that the raffle of the die-cast scale models of Norwood Police Cars was successfully initiated. Contact a member for more information. The Society will participate in the Norwood Chamber of Commerce's 116th Norwood Day Parade on July 22. We will be unit number 45. Come on out and line Montgomery Road from Ashland to Maple — the historic parade starts at 7:00 p.m.

This evening, the beautiful and, of course, historic Zion United Church of Christ held the first concert of the newly formed Norwood Community Chorus. Those who could sing like angels were in the choir, and those of us who can't even hum a tune, just enjoyed the wonderful talents of the choir and soloists. Actually, there were some pretty good voices in the audience, too, as the director requested everyone to join in during parts of the last two songs.

For those not afraid of a "little" rain, the 5th Annual Norwood Hometown Fireworks at Shea Stadium was worth it. Although the program had to be shortened, the Rossi fireworks were brilliant and loud. Thanks to the Fireworks Committee and volunteers for the show and allowing us to participate. Also, thank you to everyone who stopped by the Norwood Historical Society table to discuss Norwood History and support the Society.

Two e-mail questions:

Q: Where can I get information about the structures on the Lindner Park/McCullough Nature Preserve trails?
A: The park caretaker has copies of the old pamphlet which has a map and descriptions of the trails. A copy may be placed on this site later. Some of the structures are:

Spring House - built with Cypress logs and cedar shingles; used with ice cut from duck pond to store food

Rock Bridge - built around turn of century; part of road from Cypress Way to barn

Pool - 36 ft. x 74 ft.; originally was spring feed, but later used city water; last used in the 1950s

Bath House - built near pool with same materials as Spring House; has "his and hers" dressing room and shower

Duck Pond Goose Shelter - located at far end of duck pond to encourage nesting

McCullough Sign - originally a gate from downtown Cincinnati

Q: Do you have information about Dudley Street or Avenue in Norwood?
A: Dudley Avenue page has been added to the [STREETS] section with some data. Currently, it appears to be the entrance to Lower and Middle Millcrest Parks. If anyone has more information about this street, please let us know.

At the June meeting the Society decided to participate in the Norwood Parade, and enthusiastically support a fund raising idea (details to be given later). Click here for the next scheduled meeting, Saturday, July 12, 2008, at 2:00 p.m., in the McCullough Homestead at Lindner Park.

Three more web sites with Norwood history have been added to the LINKS page. One is Cincinnati Views, an extensive old postcard and photo site with many Norwood images. One page in particular is interesting — Norwood and Cincinnati schools. The second site is Norwood, Ohio, on Wikipedia. It contains much historical and current information about Norwood. The third site is Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center - formerly St. Mary's Seminary in Norwood.

Thanks to Lee G. for e-mailing information about the Hires Root Beer bottle. He said he remembered taking a tour of the plant when he was a student at Sharpsburg in the late 40's. He said the plant was on Duck Creek near Hudson Avenue.

Officers were elected at the Norwood Historical Society's May 10 meeting at the McCullough House. The Open House included refreshments — punch, cookies, cucumber sandwiches and a 30th anniversary cake — thanks to Susan — and enjoyed by the members in attendance and several park visitors! Also, the park looks great — thanks Nancy!

The Cincinnati Enquirer's Shannon Russell wrote an article (Saturday, May 3, 2008) about Raymond Davis, an 86-year-old Norwood graduate, and his research for a biography of his second-cousin, Arthur Pickens. Pickens was born in Norwood in 1888 and became a jockey. One-hundred years ago, he won the Kentucky Derby, at the age of 19. Click here to read the story.

Thanks to Teri R. for e-mailing information about the Norwood Refrigeration company. Over 1,950 entries for Norwood businesses and other organizations from the 1890s to the present are now in the [COMPANIES] section. Many of these businesses were operated or owned by Norwood residents.

A question has been posted concerning researching the history of a house in West Norwood. This is a common question asked by many Norwood residents. Send in your suggestions for reseaching Norwood houses, especially methods that have worked for you. They will be listed in the House History page.

When the old High School (now Middle School) was built on Sherman Avenue (ca. 1912-14), were any houses moved from the site to other locations — e.g., Maple Avenue? We haven't been able to find anything conclusive ... does anyone have information about this?
