The addition of the 1930 census to many libraries and genealogy societies has caused a great interest in finding people in that census year. Unfortunately when the census was taken the government was financially strapped and there was not enough money to create a soundex index for 1930 like there is for 1900, 1910 and 1920. This makes it very difficult to find someone without knowing their exact address and location. Some of the subscription genealogy services have added the 1930 images to their offerings and some like Ancestry.com have included their own transcribed index. The following is the link to Ancestry.Com's 1930 Census Index Search:
Ancestry.com 1930 U.S. Federal Census Index SearchAncestry.com has made their index available to all with the exception that the personal data and the images are not able to be viewed unless you subscribe to Ancestry.com. There is a way around this. Ancestry.com provides a link to the image of the individual search results and imedded in this link are the state, Series, roll number and image number. If you utilize the NARA 1930 Census Research page located at http://1930census.archives.gov/beginSearch.asp, you can determine the counties the reel covers and then by plugging in the county and the township and towns specified on the NARA page for that county, determine a location for the individual. It is then a process of using the images either from another non-indexed site like Heritage Quest, or the actual microfilm, you can then navigate to that locaility and go through the census page by page until you find the person you are looking for. You can further use information on the image to determine how far to jump to find the right page.
Sound complicated? It is but it can be done. Since the focus of this site is Muskingum, I have gone to the trouble of creating a conversion chart so you should be able to determine the exact page using the information provided by Ancestry.com's index. The table below lists the township, localities and city wards covered in the 1930 Federal Census for Muskingum county. The images provided by both Heritage Quest and Ancestry.com are sequential but are not numbered the same. Heritage quest does number their images starting with 1 in each enumeration group. You can find this image number under the heading of "HQ Image." It also provides a sequential numbering of each image in that group so by using the Ancestry.com image number, first find the group and enumeration district that number exists in. Subtract the Ancestry.com image number that corresponds with the first page of that enumeration district. Use the remainder to add to the HQ Image number and that should give you the number of images to jump from the first page of that enumeration group.
Here is an example using one of my relatives that I know lived in Muskingum County.
I am looking for "Clay Mock." I entered his name and entered Ohio and
Muskingum in the State and County fields. The results returned one person
that matched that criteria. The link to "View Image" is as follows:
http://content.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=6224&iid=OHT626_1859-0263
From this we determine the following:
Using the Ancestry.Com image number 0263 we see from the table that it is in Zanesville, Ward 4, Enumeration district 60-44.
We see from the table that the first Ancestry.com image number for enumeration district 60-44 is 225.
Subtracting 225 from 263 gives us 38. The person should be found 38 pages from the first page of that enumeration district.
If the first image in that enumeration district is 1 then just add 1 to the number found in the previous step to find the converted image number. In this case the first image in ED 60-44 is 47. Adding 38 to 47 we get 85. This is the image number in that group. Since Heritage Quest has a separate group for Zanesville Ward 4 and they supply a "Jump" field, entering 85 in that field and hitting enter will jump to the correct page.
If you have access to Heritage Quest or another non-indexed image site, then this step is moot as you will already know the Sheet Number and Page Number on the image you found. If you are using microfilm then knowing these numbers can be more convenient than counting pages.
Using the table we find the first page for ED 60-44 is 112A. The Sheet number always starts at 1A for each enumeration district. Each page and sheet are counted with an "A" and "B" page so every odd numbered page will be an "A" and Every even numbered page will be a "B".
If we use the number from Step 3, 38 and divide it by two, we get 19 with no remainder. Add 1 (each ED starts at 1) and this gives us 20. The first page is always "A". If dividing by two leaves a remainder then it would be the "B" page.
This gives us the Sheet number of 20A.
The first page number for the enumeration district 60-44 is 112A. Adding 19 to this number gives us 131A. This is the actual page number.
The above example can easily be seen by looking at a complete list of all pages for ED 60-44 from the following:
