A history of Madison Township was envisioned as a worthy project as
part of a Bicentennial observance. An award-winning author recognized by
the Ohio Association of Historical Societies and Museums was chosen for
the assignment. He is well known for his work in the local history field
and the bibliography includes the titles of some of his area books.
George Crout was born at the Madison Township homestead of his maternal
grandparents. His great, great grandfather, David Williamson had settled
on land between the West Alexandria and Michael Roads in 1815. Crout was
born in the original log section of the 1815 house. His paternal great
grandparents were from the Browns Run area. The book contains many
sketches that were made by a native of the township- -Herbert W. Fall,
whose studio and home was at the corner of Howe and Eck Roads. He attended
the old Fall School built on land off his grandfather's farm.
This book is on Madison Township itself, and includes only brief
references to the major city of Trenton. Trenton is covered in detail in
two books by authors, Edward J. Keefe and Doris L. Page, et al. Obviously
the reader will need to study them to complete an understanding of
township history. Other area studies of the township are topics of books
by Page and some more detailed accounts of Madison Township events may be
found in Crout's newspaper columns that appeared in the Middletown
Journal.
