The Chain Gang was a program setup in Belmont County in 1885 for the lesser offenders. If a person was convicted, and was unable to pay his or her fine, they were put on the Chain Gang to work on the various Belmont County Roads for $1.50 a day. Once the fine was paid in full, the prisoner was released. The program was dissolved in 1888.
