Farm Buildings
At
the time these buildings were built, near the turn of the century, concrete was
not readily available. But rock,
particularly the limestone and sandstone that underlies Monroe County, Ohio was
everywhere and cheap. Most farm buildings
of the era were built on foundations of stone that were laid directly on the
ground. The wooden structural posts and
beams were laid directly on the stone foundations. The above is a corner of a chicken house.
The
demise of many of the old buildings of this era can be traced to the eventual
shifting of these foundation stones allowing the buildings to shift and
eventually fall down. Rodents including
groundhogs, ground squirrels, rats and mice that liked to make their homes
close to a food supply that they frequently found in the buildings, were a
major cause of these foundation stones eventually shifting.
