Basement
of the Farm House
As
with the barn, the rolling hills provided construction opportunities for the
house as well. This farm house sported
a walk-out basement. Being under the
house and carved into the hill, the temperature remained fairly controlled in
both summer and winter. Such basements
were heavily used for food storage of such things as apples, potatoes, onions,
canned fruits, vegetables and meats and in many cases for the temporary storage
of dairy products. Except for canned
meats the basement was usually not used for smoked meat products because the
higher humidity was more conducive to the growth of molds and fungi.
