  • When did Birth and Death records start in Ohio? By law Birth and Death records started in Ohio in 1867, however, because of the Courthouse fire in Licking County in April, 1875, no Birth and Death records exist for Licking County before 1875 except a few that were recorded after the fire. From 1875-1908 the Birth and Death records can be found in the Probate Court of Licking County. These Death records are available online at: http://www.kinfinder.com/deaths/LickCoDeaths.htm Birth Registrations and Corrections are available online at: http://www.kinfinder.com/births/BirthRegisterIntro.htm Since 1908 the Birth and Death records have been maintained by the Vital Statistics, Ohio Department of Health. In Licking County the County Health Department and The City of Newark Health Department also have the Birth and Death Records from 1908 to the present time. The Ohio Historical Society has the Death Records from the State Vital Statistics. Check the Ohio Historical Society web site for more information at: http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/archlib/death1.html

  • How far back do marriage records exist for Licking County? Most marriage records in Licking County were destroyed in the Courthouse fire of 1875. The surviving marriage records included 3 small books covering the period 1808-1829. Other marriage records before the fire were transcribed from the records of Ministers and individuals who brought in their records to reconstruct the materials between 1842-1879. The surviving and transcribed records were copied and published by the Licking County Genealogical Society as the Transcribed Marriage Book. See the L.C.G.S. Publications web page

  • Are Wills and Probate records available before the 1875 fire? Very few Probate Records survived the fire. An index of the Probate Records that did survive along with a name index is available online. The information has been published by L.C.G.S. in the book "Licking County Ohio Probate Records 1828-1904." Wills and other Probate Records exist from 1875 to the present time and are available from the Licking County Probate Court - see the L.C.G.S. Home page under "Researching in Licking County" for more information.

  • Where is Marion Township? There is no Marion Township in Licking County. I have seen this listed as the place of birth or previous residence of some former Licking Countians. The Marion Township is no doubt supposed to be Mary Ann Township, Licking County.
