He is Henry Walker Crabb (I've also seen called Hiram Walker Crabb, H. W. Crabb) born in Jefferson County, Ohio, January 1st 1828. He was the eldest son of Henry and Esther Walker Crabb. In 1840 they moved to Adams County, Ohio, until 1853.

If you have any information or leads you can direct me to it would be much obliged.

I am trying to find the children belonging to David and Flora (Mackey) FULKS. I know they had a Jane, Sarah, John and possibly a Euphemia. I am missing the 5th child. This family was married in Trumbull County, Ohio 1819 then came to Knox Twp, Jefferson Co, Ohio abt 1840-1850 and died in this county. I have not been able to find where they are buried and appreciate any information about this. I think the parents were Jacob and Miss (Snodgrass) Fulk/Volck for David Fulks and John and Euphemia (Kinkaid) Mackey for Flora/Florence (Mackey) FULKS. If anyone recognizes these people, I truly appreciate any added clues or information. Be glad to share what I know.

If there is a separate Hodgens Cemetery I would appreciate learning its location.

The Wm. Camper in the Hodgens lot at the Mound cemetery and the Aunt Kate whose marker isn't mentioned were slaves of the Hodgens family.

I have an ancestor that family notes say worked at a brickyard in or near Dillonvale at some period in the last half of the 1800s. Well, I know for certain that as a teen he and other family members worked at the Thomas Anderson and Sons (Clinton) Fire Brick Co. at Anderson's Landing WV. I also know his dad was still working (was supervisor) for the Clinton company in 1900. So, I wonder if indeed the son was working for another brick company at or near Dillonvale, Ohio or continued on at the WV plant. My question to you is was there a brick company operating in or around Dillonvale, Jefferson Co., Ohio in the last decades of the 1800s? With Thanks,

I am looking for any information on John Mc Farland, born c1837, possibly in Steubenville. He was living in Steubenville in the 1860s (I have his 2 year diary, which tells of his travels to Cuba and then back to Steubenville, working as some sort of engineer on steam and coal trains and boats.) He had a brother James and sister Sally. He married Martha Bonney in around c1860 - 65. I believe he must have died between 1867 and 1872, because Martha had remarried a Cowen by 1872 (she bought a plot in Union Cemetery in September of 1872 and signed her name Martha S. Cowan, late Martha S. Mc Farland.)

John Mc Farland and Martha had two children. Their second daughter was Bertha Elizabeth Mc Farland, born in Steubenville on Sept. 29, 1866. Bertha was my great grandmother. Any information on the family of John Mc Farland would be appreciated.

Thomas Harper married Mary White (incorrectly listed in the marriage records as "Wright") on 9 September 1824. Thomas was the son of William Harper who was a member of the Ohio Militia from Jefferson County in the War of 1812. Thomas was born 1804 probably in Mifflin Co., PA. Mary White was a widow with a 7-year- old son, John Willis White. She was born 1794 in Washington Co. PA. Thomas and Mary moved to Holmes Co. OH shortly after marriage and there their 6 children were born. Mary may have been first married to a son of the John White on the 1820 census for Steubenville. This needs confirming.

Date Posted: 02 January 2003

I am trying to locate some census records but can't determine "which" townships that Bradley, or Glen Robbins; would have been in either 1920 or 1930.

I am trying to locate an "Anna Nemeth" who would have been about 18 at the time with 2 younger brothers Louis (16) and Steve (14). Their father had died the previous year (1929) and as I understand it, Anna worked out of the home in the Bradley/Glen Robbins area. My understanding is that these may or may not have been coal mining towns, but I can't find any information on them.

I never have located any burial information on John Nemeth either; and I don't know particularly which cemeteries would have been close to the Yorkville locality where he might have been buried.

Anna is actually living today in Rayland, but she her memory is gone and she has bone cancer so isn't much in the way of genealogical help any more. She is the sister to my grandmother who passed on some 30 years ago and the last link I have to learning any information about the family line. If I can locate the census extracts, I might be able to determine when the parents came to America and get a passenger list.

If you can help me with any information about the actual townships these localities might have resided in, I would greatly appreciate it.

Michael Castner was the eldest brother of my ggggggrandfather, Johannes/John Castner. They were sons of Peter and Magdalena Castner, who migrated abt 1770 from eastern Pennsylvania, across the Alleghenies to the present Greensburg (Hempfield Township, Westmoreland County) area, thence abt 1780 to the Monongahela River bottom land at the present site of Donora (Fallowfield/Carroll Township, Washington County).

According to Doyle, Joseph B., The History of Steubenville and Jefferson County Ohio, ch. XXII (Chicago, Ill. 1910): Michael Castner, grandfather of Thomas P. Spencer, Esq., who built a mill at the head of Wills Creek at the beginning of the century, was on the site of Steubenville while it was a wildernessbefore the place was considered as a town-site. He owned a store on the Monongahela River and one in Kentucky, riding on horseback from one to the other, and going through this region, he frequently stopped on the site of Steubenville. He bought a thousand acres of land in what is now Island Creek Township, and he was one of the pioneer merchants of Steubenville. He built the large brick dwelling near Two Ridge Church, now occupied by Dr. John Kilgore, and his remains are interred in the graveyard nearby.

This probably is not news to you. However, we have no record of the children of Michael Castner and Sarah Heslep or their descendents. The federal census of 1800 listed Michael in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and the 1806 federal census listed him in Jefferson County, Ohio. Even though we have a fairly complete history of the Castners in Washington County, Pennsylvania, we have no record of Michael's store on the Mononghalia River or his store in Kentucky.

In short, I would certainly like to work with members of the Castner family in Jefferson County who have further information about Michael and Sarah and their descendents.

Our goal is to assemble a graphic history of the Castner family, beginning at least with Peter and Magdalena, with images of historic documents, historic photos when available, and current photos of historic Castner lands and buildings. The graphic history will be placed on CDs in .pdf format for distribution to members of the Castner family and interested genealogists and historians. The earliest document we have found is the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania land patent to Peter Castner for the Mononghalia River farmland. We are searching for earlier documents. The history of Michael and Sarah Castner would be a valuable addition.

John Castner and his wife, Elizabeth Dull, were parents of Peter Castner, who migrated to Indiana in 1835 (and my ggggrandfather), and were antecedents of the Castners who in 1899 sold the family farmland to the Mellons, who founded the American Wire Works and the town of Donora, Pennsylvania, on the site.

I will appreciate any help you can offer.
Thank you.

I am researching my family's history in eastern Ohio. We have a land grant signed by president Thomas Jefferson and secretary of state James Madison. This paper is dated 1802. It was filed at the lands office in Steubenville. It gives title to land in section 26, township 8, in the second range of the land directed to be sold at Steubenville. The name of the person to whom the land was sold was Reasin Bealle. He was somehow related to my mother's father. His name was George L Swickard--he was born in the 1870's. His family lived in and around Steubenville. My mother cannot remember how her father was related to Mr. Bealle. If you have any information that would be helpful, we would love it.

I am looking for information about my father's uncle William John BUNNEY and his family.

William John was born 2nd September 1881 in Ulverston, England and was the eldest of 8 children. In 1884 the family moved to Wales to a mining village called Penrhiwceiber. It was while living there that William met Catherine Jane Marsh who became his wife on 10th October 1900. They had 3 children Daniel Henry b. 4th April 1901. Elsie May b. 17th September 1903 and Doris b. 7th July 1908.

On 7th September 1911 they left the UK aboard the SS. Baltic sailing for the USA and arrived on 15th September 1911. They were travelling with William John's uncle who was also called William. William was believed to be a manager of a coal mine in Piney Fork, Jefferson County which was owned by the Hanna coal company. I do know that William John worked there for a while.

Is there any way I can find out where he lived etc. I also know that by 1930 they were living in South Fayette Pa. Thanks

My name is Eric Emfield. My wife, Jennifer and I started the Emfield Historical Society back in 1989 and have a web-based family history and genealogy group that shares data on the Emfield and related lines. (www.myfamily.com User name: browsing Password: emfield )

We have been researching on several Emfield family ancestors who were some of the early settlers in both Jefferson and Harrison Counties. (John & Elizabeth [Tipton] Emfield settled in the southern portion of Harrison County before 1820.) Several of their sons married in the area (Harrison, Tuscarawas, Coshocton & Jefferson Counties). We have been searching for one particular individual, a HENRY MERLE EMFIELD (Dec 1849 - Jan 1923) who lived in your county (Jefferson) the majority of his life. We have been seeking additional information on him to try and determine who his parents were. We already have obtained his death certificate, but it didn't not reveal this information, since the informant was his second wife and she didn't know.

We don't know if you can help or if you might forward this e-mail to someone in the OGS or some other group that could. What we are seeking is a contact in the area that we might work with to confirm some details, a person who knows what resources we may not have checked or could check a couple of things for us. (Our Emfield Historical Society does the same for researchers in our area, especially since we have access to the Salt Lake Family History Library, only 2 hrs. drive from here in Idaho.)

Specifically, we just found on your web site the "Rehoboth" Cemetery that was listed on his death certificate. (Thank you!!) Is there someone who could send us a photo of his headstone? We'd be glad to pay for the services rendered. Are there sexton records that might list his parents or other burial info that could help?

Please let us know what you can do or who can give us a hand. We have been fascinated by the wonderful history of your area and would like to link Henry with the rest of the family. To help, we've included notes from his file in our genealogical database. We've been building a timeline and only need a few more details to wrap this one up.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
