John L. Hague

Born in Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio, April 17, 1840. Enlisted in Co. K, 71st O. V. I., March 15, 1864, for three years. Discharged therefrom Nov. 30, 1865, at San Antonio, Texas, by Special Order No. 62, Department of Texas, dated Oct. 23, 1865.

Comrade Hague joined the company at Gallatin, Tennessee. The regiment was then guarding the Louisville and Nashville R. R. and their business was to guard bridges and railroad property. They were also charged with the duty of dispersing the many Guerilla bands that infested that region. Early in the campaign of 1864 the 71st moved farther south and was joined to the Fourth Corps, coming to it just after the battle of Jonesboro. Went from there up to Atlanta, and after Atlanta's fall the 4th corps was sent in pursuit of Hood, up into Tennessee. Fought the battle of Franklin, Nov. 30, 1864 and was also actively engaged in the battle of Nashville. The regiment in this engagement fought with great bravery, as they lost fully one-third their men and several good and valuable officers. The thin ranks of the regiment gave evidence of severe service, but it retained its old time fire and enthusiasm. Was shortly after this last battle ordered to Texas and was on severe duty all summer, but as the fighting was now over, they longed to go back to the civil pursuits of life, feeling that on several battlefields the rank and file had attested their courage and devotion. Comrade Hague, from the time he joined the regiment, remained with it in all its fighting and marching, and was mustered out at Camp Chase in January 1866, and at this date is suffering partial paralysis of the limbs, which is undoubtedly the result of hardship and exposure in the army.
