Death Claims Husband, Wife Mr., Mrs. McCandless Succumb in Hospital

William Thomas McCandless of 414 Henry Ave., who died Sunday at 4:15 a.m. in Ohio Valley Hospital, was followed in death by his wife, Mrs. Vera Thompson McCandless in the hospital at 1:30 a.m.
Mr. McCandless had been seriously ill and hospitalized for a week. His widow had been ill since last November, and her death was due to complications. Mr. McCandless, 69, was born in Ireland in 1883, a son of the late William john and Mary J. McDole McCandless. He was an employe of the Strip Steel Department of Weirton Steel Company. Mrs. McCandless, a native of Steubenville, was born Feb. 9, 1885, a daughter of the late Charles R. and Violetta Fisher Thompson. She formerly was employed by the Hub Department Store for 25 years. She was an active member of the Woman's 100 Republican Club. Both were members of Calvary Methodist Church.
She was a member of the First United Presbyterian church, the Query Club, the Kings Daughters, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion Auxiliary. Her desires were for activity in all these organizations, but ill health for several years prevented it. Surviving are her husband, and two children, Jean, wife of Lieut. Watson C. Marshall of Pittsburgh in U. S. Navy; Robert R., Jr., recently at Ohio State University who will join the U.S. Air Corps Monday. A daughter, Helen, died in 1929.
Joint funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the McClave Funeral Home where friends will be received after 7 p.m. today. The Rev. John Lane Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Union Cemetery. Surviving Mr. McCandless are a niece and 10 nephews. Five sisters and a brother, preceded him in death.
