Jessie Lewellyn Erwin




Jessie Lewellyn Erwin was born in Steubenville, Jefferson, Ohio on 9 April 1868. She was the daughter of James W. and Ada A. Baron Erwin. She taught American History in Steubenville. She never married. She descended from Revolutionary ancestor George Hill, Pvt. Pennsylvania. He is buried in Washington Co. PA but his son, Robert K. Hill, soldier of the Revolution, also, moved to Mingo and is buried in the Hill Family Cemetery in Mingo Junction. Jessie joined DAR 20 Nov 1922 on George Hill. Her National # was 181735. She was a cousin to Mrs. William Leech (Kizzie Hill). She died in Steubenville 8 May 1945 and is buried in Union Cemetery- Block P: Lot # 121; Steubenville, Jefferson, Ohio.

Retired School Teacher Dies at Home Here






Miss Jessie L. Erwin, 314 Clinton street, retired Steubenville school teacher, died at 7:55 p.m. Saturday, after an illness of three weeks. Miss Erwin was born in Steubenville the daughter of James W., and Ada Baron Erwin, both deceased.

She was a graduate of Steubenville high school. She was a teacher in the grade schools in several buildings for nearly 50 years, retiring several years ago. She was admirably equipped by reason of her pleasing personality and ability to be an educator of children.

Miss Erwin was held in high esteem by the pupils she taught and the teaching staff, and by many friends who will regret her death.

She came of Revolutionary ancestry and was a member of the D. A. R. and the Woman's club. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian church and also the former Second Presbyterian church.

Surviving are three brothers, Emmett and Roy of this city, and John Carlton of St. Petersburg, FLorida. One brother, Stuart, is deceased.
