Mrs. ELIZA GOEHRING SUCCUMBS TO ILLNESS




Mrs. Eliza Cranmer Goehring, 80, of 302 Braebarton Blvd., widow of Dr. Carl Goehring and a Steubenville civic leader, died Friday at 6:50 p.m. in Ohio Valley Hospital.


Mrs. Goehring was preceded in death by her husband, former Ohio Valley Hospital pathologist, in August, 1962.


An active participant in many Steubenville organizations, Mrs. Goehring was founding president of the Colonel James Collier Chapter of U.S. Daughters of 1812 and was a past president one of the founders of the Ohio Valley Pan-Hellenic Association.


She also was a past president of the Steubenville Woman's Club, past regent of the Steubenville Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, charter member of the Jefferson County Auxiliary to the American Medical Association, charter member of the League of Women Voters and a member of the Ohio Historical Society and served on the boards of the YWCA, Federal Land Office Building and Neighborhood House.


Mrs. Goehring also was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and Alpha Chi Omega, national colleftiate sorority.


Daughter of the late Dr. Harry James Cranmer and Nina Erskine Cranmer, Mrs. Goehring attended Steubenville Public Schools, graduating from Steubenville High School. She received her bachelor and master degrees in history in 1916 from the University of Michigan and continued her studies in the doctoral program at Columbia University before accepting a teaching position in Rochester, Minn. She returned to Steubenville in 1921, joining the faculty of Steubenville High School where she taught history for a number of years.


She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Richard T. (Nina) McGowan of Steubenville, and two grandchildren, Eliza Marie McGowan and Richard M. McGowan.


One brother, Dr. L. Reed Cranmer, also preceded her in death. She was born Feb. 9, 1892 in Steubenville.


Friends may call at the McClave-Chandler-Mills Funeral Home from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. Funeral services will be held in the McClave Chapel Monday at 1 p.m. with Dr. William Ferry officiating. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery.


Mrs. Goehring's favorite charity is the Ohio Valley Hospital.
