Mrs. Francis, Patriotic Group Leader, Dies




Mrs. Annette H. Francis of 1107 Wellesley Ave., an active leader in women's patriotic organizations and a former school teacher, died at 7:30 a.m. Thursday in Ohio Valley Hospital. She had been a patient since Nov. 29.


Mrs. Francis , widow of Hurford B. Francis was a charter member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 332 of Smithfield and the Daughters of the American Revolution of Steubenville. She was a past president of the DAR, having served from 1936 to 1938.


Mrs. Francis was a member of the Panhellenic Association; Pi Beta Phi Sorority; Ohio University Alumni Association; Steubenville Woman's Club, having been active in the American Home Department; Smithfield Senior Woman's Club and the American Legion Auxiliary, Argonne Post No. 33.


Mrs. Francis was a graduate of Ohio University and had taught in Smithfield and Steubenville schools.


She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.


She was born in Athens COunty, Ohio, the daughter of the late Joseph S. and Hannah Wood Hibbard Higgins.


Her husband died Aug. 25, 1949. Mrs. Francis leaves two sisters, Mrs. J. B. Francis of Smithfield and Mrs. H. Elizabeth McKinney of Steubenville and several nieces and nephews. Two sisters and five brothers preceded her in death.


Friends may call at the McClave Funeral Home from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday.


Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in McClave Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Charles W. Fulton will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Northern Cemetery, Smithfield.
