JOHN M. EWING,
Sheriff of Jackson County Ohio, was born on the 16th day of January, 1842, in Madison County, Ohio. He was the oldest of six children, whose parents were Peter Ewing and Elizabeth Clemens. His father was a native of Madison County, followed through life mercantile and agricultural pursuits. He was for about eight years deputy sheriff of Jackson County, and died in 1869. The mother of the subject of this memoir was a native of Madison County. Her family were of Virginia descent. She is yet living in Jackson at an advanced age. The early education of John was received at the common school. At the age of fifteen he became engineer of a Furnace Company, which vocation employed his attention for about seven years. He served as a soldier of Co. D., First Ohio Heavy Artillery during two years of the war of the Rebellion. In 1868 he assumed the duties of deputy sheriff of Jackson County, and discharged the duties of this office for about seven years. In the fall of 1874 he was elected sheriff of Jackson County, which office he now holds. Politically, Mr. Ewing is a republican; voted first for Abraham Lincoln. Religiously, he is a Methodist. Mr. Ewing is eminently adapted, by reason of his experience in life, for the arduous and responsible duties of sheriff of Jackson County.
