With a group of fellow Quakers in 1769 he and his young family moved to Redstone Old Fort in south west PA. and settled on the east bank of the Monongahela River. Thomas and son, John were squatters on the west bank of theOhio River in the 1780's. Thus the town of Tiltonsville, Warren twp., Jefferson Co., OH, reflects the early Tilton occupation in Ohio.

Notes for Richard Tilton:

Richard Tilton, the first settler of Virginia twp., came to this county in 1805. Hewas born at Red Stone Fort near Pittsburgh in 1774 at a time when the region was embroiled in a fierce Indian war. When a boy he was captured on Short Creek, Jefferson county, OH. His home at the time was in Pennsylvania, and he had crossed the Ohio to dig ginseng root, an article of commercial value, which grew there in rich profusion.
