for George W. Spiker.
OBITUARY: Emporia Gazette October 28, 1908
G.
W. Spiker died yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock at
his home, 721 Union Street after a lingering illness
of about a year. Mr. Spiker was afflicted with
apoplexy. He was 80 years old and had been a
resident of Kansas many years. The funeral
arrangements, which will be conducted by Rev. Joseph
H. Hill will be held tomorrow at the family home at
2 o'clock. On account of the serious illness of Mrs.
Spiker at the home, it is desired that only intimate
friends of the family attend the funeral, as any
extra confusion might be fatal to her. The casket
will be opened between 1 and 2 o'clock tomorrow
afternoon, but will not be opened after the
services, which will be short. Interment will be in
Maplewood.
G. W. Spiker was born in Harrison County, Ohio in
1828. He lived in his native state until 1884, when
he came to Kansas, settling on a farm north of
Emporia up to his removal to Emporia. He joined the
Methodist church when 14 years old and has been a
faithful and consistent member ever since. He leaves
his wife and eight children, all of whom are living.
Three of the children will not be able to attend the
funeral tomorrow - Mrs. J.H. McFadden of Scio, Ohio,
John H. Spiker of Chattanooga, Oklahoma and W.D.
Spiker of Kinsley, Iowa. The rest of the children,
R. S. Spiker of Fremont township; Mrs. W. A. Given
of Emporia, S.W. Spiker of Joplin, MO; D. W. Spiker
of Lyon County and Mrs. L. Washburn of Emporia are
all here.
THE
SPIKER FUNERAL
The
funeral of G.W. Spiker was held at the family home
721 Union Street yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Rev. J.H. Hill of tne Normal conducted the services,
which were short and simple on account of the
serious illness of Mrs. Spiker. The music was
furnished by a quartet from the Normal, composed of
Messrs. Beach, Wooster, Wright and Blair.
Pallbearers were F.Sutton, T.D. Little, J.S. Burton,
John Lumley, Hugh Cowan and Eben Abraham. Interment
was in Maplewood Cemetery

OBITUARY:
Emporia Gazette December 8, 1908
Mrs. G. W. Spiker died at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Lula Washburn, 721 Union Street, yesterday
afternoon at 5 o'clock after an illness of about
five months. The funeral services will be held
tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 and will be conducted by
Rev. Joseph Hill of the Normal. Between the hours of
1:30 and 2:30, the casket will be open. Interment
will be in Maplewood.
Mrs. Spiker was born (Sina Reed Smith) in Harrison
County, Ohio in 1830. There she married G.W. Spiker
and lived until 1884 when they came to Kansas. The
next ten years was spent on a farm five miles
northeast of town, and in 1894 they moved to Emporia
where they had since lived. Mr. Spiker died six
weeks ago at 5 o'clock, the same hour as his wife
but on Tuesday instead of Monday. There are eight
children, all of whom are living. Mr. Spiker's death
six weeks ago was the first break in the family. Of
the children, R.S. Spiker, D.W. Spiker, Mrs. W.A.
Givin and Mrs. Lula Washburn live in Emporia. S.W.
Spiker lives in Joplin, MO and W.D. Spiker in
Kingsley, Iowa. Both of these sons have been with
their mother during part of her illness. Mrs. John
McFadden of Scio, Ohio is another daughter and J. H.
Spiker of Chattanooga, Okla, a son, neither of whom
will be able to attend the funeral.
THE
SPIKER FUNERAL
The
funeral of Mrs. G.W. Spiker was held yesterday
afternoon at the home of her daughter, Mrs Lula
Washburn, 721 Union Street. The sermon was preached
by Rev. Joseph Hill of the Normal, and a quartet,
composed of Messrs. Beach, Wright, Wooster and
Forde, all of the Normal, furnished the music. The
pall-bearers were all teachers from the Union street
school and were Misses Julia Davis, Cora Held,
Esther Blair, Jessie Gilbert, Georgia McGahey and
Addie Wilkinson. Interment was in Maplewood
Cemetery, Emporia, Lyon Co., Kansas.
The Chariton Leader, Chariton,
IowaThursday, February 18, 1909
CLARISSA ANDERSON was born at Cadiz,
Ohio, March 18, 1840, and died at her home near
Chariton, Friday, Feb. 12, 1909. She was united in
marriage to JAMES GILLESPIE, Feb. 29, 1860. They
were the parents of eight children, seven of whom
with the husband survive her. They are DR. J. A. of
California; W..A. of Colorado; MRS. WEST of Afton;
MRS. OLIVER BREWER of Ottumwa, N. T., LILLIE and
SARAH who reside at home. One daughter died in
young womanhood.
The funeral services were held at the home in Benton
Township, conducted by Rev. G. J. Findly, Pastor of
the United Presbyterian Church, and interment made
in Chariton Cemetery. Thus another home is broken
by the loss of a loving wife and devoted mother, and
yet they have the consolation that she has finished
her work upon earth and gone to her reward in
glory. Sympathy of the community is extended to the
sorrowing relatives.

The Cadiz

William Nathan Robertson
William Robertson was born May 10, 1893, in Mercer
County, W. Va., and died July 28, 1942, at his home
between Parlett and Hopedale.
He was employed at Piney Fork by the Hannah Coal
Co., and died from an injury suffered March 30. He
was a kind and loving husband and father, and is
survived by his wife and nine children. He was a
World War veteran and members of the Cadiz Legion
fired a salute over his grave.
Funeral services were held from the Clark Funeral
Home in Cadiz, conducted by Rev. Johnson of
Hopedale.
