Cincinnati and Hamilton County are within the confines of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. The Diocese of Cincinnati was formed in 1821 and at that time covered all of Ohio as well as the rest of the Northwest Territory. By 1944 the extent of the diocese had been reduced to nineteen counties in southwest Ohio.

Cincinnati and Hamilton County has a rich Catholic heritage, profoundly influenced by German and Irish immigrants who founded national parishes where they could worship together.  Other ethnic groups also founded parishes including the Italians, Polish, and Hungarians.
