Rosa Mathews

This information was submitted by Pat Wallman for posting on the Wesleyan Cemetery web site.

Rosa Mathews was born Susie Rosa Hoobler born in Kentucky, Jul 6, 1889. She was the daughter of Thomas J. Hoobler and Sarah Cynkins. At the age of 18, she married Alva Mathews in Scioto Co., Ohio, on Nov 10, 1910. Both Alva and Rosa resided in Portsmouth, Ohio at the time of their marriage.

At the time of Alva and Rosa's marriage, Alva was the widower of Cynthia Cooper Mathews, who died of T.B. at the age of 32. Alva and Cynthia's children were William T. Mathews and Charles F. Mathews. Alva and Cynthia also lost a three year old child, Herbert L. Mathews approx 5 years prior to Cynthia's death.

From Alva and Rosa's union, five additional sons were born. These sons include Alva J., Homer, Warren Neal, Raymond and an additional son who is still living.

In 1934, Rosa's husband Alva died, leaving Rosa in Ashland, Ky with their five sons. Stepsons William and Charles, already married by this time, had been in Cincinnati, Ohio for about five years. They both lived in the SpringGrove/Winton Place area.

Rosa continued to live in Ashland, Ky until the Flood of 1937, when I am told their house was swept off the foundation. Around 1937/1938, Rosa moved to Cincinnati with her sons, next door to her stepson Charles on Spring Grove Avenue.

Rosa stayed in the Winton Place/Cincinnati Area for twenty years, until her death on April 13, 1958, at the age of 66.
