BOLES, BUMP, CARTER, COLE, PINKLEY, RIPPIN, WOODARD posted by Mary Kay Cole Ward on Wednesday, March 17, 1999
My gr-gr-grandparents were early members of the Mormon Church who helped build the Kirtland Mormon Temple in Geauga County, OH. They were Luman & Susannah Carter who came to Kirtland, Ohio from Benson, Rutland Co., VT about 1830. I've found them on census's but with only 2 of their 7 or 8 children. Their son, Simeon was only about 2 when they came to Kirtland and daughter, Charity was just a baby. Charity married Asa Bump. My gr-grandparents were Simeon Carter & Octalana Woodard. They lived lived in Kirtland, Ohio. & had about 7 children. One of their children, Simeon Carter b. abt 1875 was my grandpa. He married Nettie Lucinda Rippin and they lived in Painesville, Lake Co., Ohio where they raised my mother, Mary Elizabeth Carter Cole Pinkley Boles (married 3 times) and her sister Octalana Carter who married Harold Schwartz. Some decendants of this Carter line still reside in Kirtland, Ohio. Please contact me if you are an interested researcher or are a descendant! GARDINER, LAIRD posted by Leslie Thomas on Sunday, March 28, 1999
Hello -- When I was a child, in Cleveland, we still went down to Mesopotamia for Memorial Day (my memories of running around putting flags on the graves are vivid). My great grandfather, Harrison Laird Gardiner, was the last of my relatives to live his whole life in Mesopotamia, but my grandmother is buried there (in the Gardiner plot) and plans have been made for my parents to wind up there, too. I may even end up there, myself! I'm descended from Matthew Laird and Hannah Cox Laird, but this next part's still a bit confusing to me. I believe their daughter, Elizabeth (Betsy) married (Zeke or Ezekial?) Gardiner, from Exeter, Rhode Island, and they had a son, Jesse (my great, great grandfather). His son, Harrison Laird Gardiner, Married Cora Rice (the Rices were from Massachusetts). Harrison and Cora's oldest daughter, Pauline, was my grandmother. She married Russell Batt, of Cleveland, and their oldest daughter, Constance, is my mother. I may have added a generation in here, or dropped a stitch (between Matthew Laird and Jesse Gardiner), but this is approximately the way it happened. Cora was the school teacher in Mespo at the end of the 19th century (through 1912), and also ran the Sunday school -- I think at the M.E. Church. Anyway, I'm trying to piece it all together. I have some Laird items that might be of interest to you. For example, I have a newspaper clipping dated December 30, 1876, that reads in part: "The Laird Anniversary was held at the house of Jesse Gardiner, December 28th. Welcome, in living green, was hung over the gate and front door, and the host and hostess gave to one and all a hearty welcome. Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Dacota and California were represented. Every room was thrown open from garret to cellar, and the old farm house was filled to overflowing with parents and grand-parents, brothers and sisters, uncles, aunts and cousins. The house was called to order by the president, Anderson Laird. An appropriate prayer was offered by William Laird. The song, "Waiting for the Reapers," was sung. Then the reading of the minutes by the secretary. Some beautiful letters were read from the distant dear ones -- Abby Laird of Dacota; Mr. and Mrs. Jones of Chester Cross Roads; and Dr. M.L. Holbrook of New York City. The dear departed ones were remembered in these letters and the hearts of the present friends were cheered by these friendly epistles. On motion the President appointed Stephen Laird, Seth Laird and Mrs. Mathew Laird a committe on programme for the next annual meeting. A recitation was given by Maria E. Laird, then dinner was announced. The tables were loaded with every luxury, delicacy and substantial viands that could be found on the earth, over the earth, under the earth, or in the sea. Seventy-two guests sat down to partake thereof. Wit sparkled, humor, gay and grave, flashed out now and then, and the merry laugh went around at the bountifully spread board." . . . . . . and so on. I have some other newspaper clippings and even a couple of programs for Laird Family get-togethers (Beaver, PA, 1877 and Cleveland, OH, 1881) that I'd be happy to share with you if you haven't already seen them. I also have first and second cousins whose energies I'll try to focus before any more Laird or Gardiner memorabilia gets tossed out. I'm hoping you'll be able to tell me where to find (or how to construct) an accurate genealogy of the Mesopotamia Lairds and/or Gardiners. Thanks very much! Three others, Carlos, Susan, and Philura moved on to Allegan Co., Michigan. Daughter Lois married Silas T. GILMORE. Lois died 1899 and Silas died in 1898, both in Geauga Co. The GILMORE line may have also been intertwined with TANNER and BURLINGAME through possible aunt of Silas (?), Mary GILMORE.

AUSTIN, BUTTON, HARRISON, HAYDEN, LONG, LYMAN, RUSH, TRUMAN, WOODARD posted by Mary Kay Cole Ward on Friday, April 30, 1999
William A. HARRISON b. est 1858 of Munson, Geauga Co, OH. William married Dec 1879 Emma Harriet HAYDEN b 10 Aug 1822 in Munson, Geauga Co., Ohio and d 9 Jan 1909 in & was buried in Chardon, Geauga Co., Ohio. Emma's only brother, Lyman Austin [WOODARD] HAYDEN was not born into Emma's family-he was probably adopted. He was born, the baby brother of my ggggrandmother Octalana WOODARD. Emma Harriet HAYDEN's parents were Anson & Harriet TRUMAN HAYDEN. They had 4 known "biological children" all born in Munson, Geauga, Ohio were: 1.Cynthia A HAYDEN b abt 1849 m Jesse LONG 2. Almeda HAYDEN b Apr 1850 3. Martha Alice HAYDEN b abt 1851 m 29 Sep 1851 Horation RUSH 4. Emma Harriet HAYDEN b 10 Aug 1859 m 1879 William A. HARRISON Sometime before 1860, Emma Harriet HAYDEN's parents took another child into their family. He was LYMAN AUSTIN WOODARD b. 11 Feb 1857 Munson, Geauga Co, Ohio, the son of Wilson WOODARD and Silala TRUMAN who probably had some connection to the early Mormon church. Lyman "Austin" WOODARD and his 8 siblings were left motherless when he was one year old. When he was 3 years old in 1860 (per census) his last name was still "WOODARD" and he was living with Anson HAYDEN & wife Harriet TRUMAN HAYDEN and their children in Munson, Ohio. Sometime after that he either was adopted or just took the last name of HAYDEN and was known as "Austin HAYDEN for the rest of his 91 years of life. My mother said he was a small, wiry man who played the fiddle and loved to dance. Lyman Austin [WOODARD] HAYDEN d 12 Jan 1948. He had married Mary E. BUTTON b 1851of Concord, Lake County, Ohio d 15 May 1940 and both are buried in Lot 4, Maple Grove Cem., Thompson, Ohio. They had at least 2 children: 1. Ai Harmon HAYDEN b 1883 died 16 Jun 1938 wife Mrs. Maude C. HAYDEN b 1887-d 15 Dec 1981 both are buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Thompson, Ohio. 2 sons: Austin b est 1904 and Phillip F. b 1906. 2. M. D. HAYDEN was b. est 1885 married est. 1905 Mae Winchell who was small, pretty & soft spoken. They had no children. Mrs William HAYDEN HARRISON (Emma Harriet ) was still living when her father, Anson Hayden, died at age 83 in 1905 a very brief notice in the "Geauga County Record of 22 Sep 1905 listed his surviving children as AUSTIN Hayden of West Chardon, OH and Mrs. William HARRISON of Hambden, OH. Mrs William (Emma Harriet ) HAYDEN HARRISON's mother, Harriet TRUMAN HAYDEN, wife of Anson, died of consumption 1 May 1876 at Munson at the age of 51 years and 11 months. Her death notice says "Mrs. HAYDEN had been a great sufferer for five years but bore her sufferings with the fortitude for which woman is remarkable. A large gathering of friends testified their respect by attendance at the funeral services at North Munson, on the 3rd inst., conducted by Prof. HAYDEN." Harriet TRUMAN was born abt. 1824 in Delaware County, NY and she m. Anson HAYDEN 22 Feb 1846. I think the reason they "adopted?" Silala's 3 yr old Lyman A. WOODARD (per the1860 Munson Twp., Geauga Co. , Ohio census) is because Harriet TRUMAN and Silala TRUMAN b 1819 NY probably were sisters as each one’s maiden name was TRUMAN and their husbands were both born in Bennington County, Vermont. I've been told that the Geauga County Geneological Society in Chardon has Probate Court microfilm records which might have a record of this adoption by Haydens around 1860 but I haven't been able to get it yet. I'm trying to find out more about William A. HARRISON b. est 1858 of Munson, Geauga Co, OH and his wife and their families. Please write if you have any information.

AUSTIN, BUMP, BUTTON, CARTER, CARTERS, HARRISON, HAYDEN, LONG, LYMAN, RUSH, TREMAIN, TRUMAN, WOODARD posted by Mary Kay Cole Ward on Friday, April 30, 1999
I'm trying to find out more about Jesse LONG b. abt 1849 of Kirtland, Lake Co, Ohio and his wife and their families. Jesse LONG married abt 1872 Cynthia A. HAYDEN who was born abt 1849 in Munson, Geauga Co., Ohio and she died sometime before Sep 1905 probably in Lake Co. or Geauga Co., Ohio. Cynthia's only known brother, Lyman "Austin" [WOODARD] HAYDEN was not "born" into Cynthia's family; he was a WOODARD-the baby brother of my ggggrandmother Octalana WOODARD. Cynthia A. HARRISON On the 1870 Kirtland census when my gggrandfather Luman CARTER (74 yrs old) was still alive, he was living with his daughter, Charity CARTER BUMP and her husband Asa BUMP. The Isaac LONG family were their next door neighbors in Kirtland, Ohio. That 1870 census lists Isaac LONG (51 or 54 years old-who "works in grist mill" and was b. in Penn) as the head of the household, Sabra LONG 49 b. NY and Washington Long 17 -farm laborer b. Ohio. I believe they were Jesse LONG's parents. 10 years later in 1880, my gggrandfather, Luman CARTER was dead but his daughter, Charity CARTER BUMP and her husband Asa BUMP were still living in the same home and Jesse LONG & family were now their next door neighbors in the home where Isaac LONG & family had lived 10 years before. The 1880 Kirtland Village, Lake County, Ohio census) shows Jesse LONG 33, his wife Cynthia [HAYDEN]-31 & children Bernice 6 and George 5. Back in 1860, when Cynthia A. Mr. HAYDEN was born in Munson Feb. 11, 1857, and lived his entire life in Geauga county where he was engaged in farming before his retirement many years ago. He was married to the former Mary E. BUTTON of Concord. Besides his son, M.D. HAYDEN, he is survived by two grandsons, Austin, of Thompson and Phillip F. of Ravenna. Cynthia A. HAYDEN LONG had died before her father, Anson HAYDEN, died at age 83 in 1905 a very brief notice in the "Geauga County Record of 22 Sep 1905 listed his surviving children as "Austin" Hayden of West Chardon, OH and Mrs. William HARRISON of Hambden, OH. I've been told that the Geauga County Geneological Society in Chardon has Probate Court microfilm records which might have a record of this adoption by Haydens around 1860 but I haven't been able to get it yet. PIECES OF THE ANCESTRY of Cynthia A. HAYDEN LONG's brother, LYMAN AUSTIN [WOODARD] HAYDEN: My mother, Mary Elizabeth CARTER died at age 83 a year ago. Her grandfather was a WOODARD. I know little about the WOODARDS but I've learned that my CARTERS came from Vermont to Kirtland, Ohio and were early Mormon followers of Joseph Smith. A year ago I started researching the WOODARDs with only a list, handwritten by my Mom, showing my gggrandparents, Wilson and Lila TRUMAN WOODARD and their 9 children -the 2nd born who was my great grandmother, Octalana WOODARD CARTER. In Geauga County, Ohio marriage records, Wilson WOODARD married 9 Feb 1842 Silala TRUMAN(E). Following are the 9 children, all born probably in Geauga County, Ohio on my Mom’s handwritten list. 1) Lyman L. Woodard b. Aug 23, 1843 [I have not found] *2) Octalana Woodard (Mom’s grandmother) b. Jan 1845, m. Simeon Carter; *3) Silas O. Woodard b. 17 June 1848 m. Carrie Belle Kellogg-ch. C. Phoebe *4) Alice O. Woodard b. Nov. 6, 1850 found in book "The Hazen Family in America" m. George Washington Hazen. *5) Jane O."Jennie Omelia" Woodard b. Aug 11 or 17 1852 m. T. Lampman. 6) Deforest O. Woodard b. Sept 10, 1854. [I have not found] *7) Lyman A Woodard b. Feb. 11, 1857 [3 yrs old in Anson Hayden’s family on the 1860 census] adopted? by HAYDENs m Mary E. Button 8) Lila Woodard b. Feb. 17, 1857 [I have not found] 9) William (died). [I have not found] Silala (Lila / Sally) TRUMAN WOODARD, the dau. of Jeremiah & Rachel TRUMAN/ TREMAIN apparently died soon after the birth of her last baby in 1858 at about age 37. My Mom was told that Silala WOODARD's children were "parceled out" to other families. Silala was buried in the Kirtland Mormon Temple Cemetery, Kirtland, Ohio as were also her parents and her oldest daughter, Octalana WOODARD CARTER who d. 1881. Octalana WOODARD was wife of Simeon CARTER, she was the daughter-in-law of Luman CARTER, and she was the sister-in-law of Charity CARTER BUMP. Sixty years ago when I was 5 yrs old I spent some childhood years in St. John's Episcopal Orphanage in Painesville, Ohio after my parents divorced and now I'm trying to find my roots. If you think you have any pieces to the LONG / HAYDEN-ie. Cynthia's, "Austin"s and MY tangled family puzzle, PLEASE write. Gratefully, Mary Kay COLE WardRichmond, VA
