Derekoy
Orthodox church of Haghia Paraskevi "Derekoy is in the Mudanya region of Turkey. It is located less than 10 km south of the City of Mudanya. The ruins of the church are a result of Turkish aggression. Read more: Derekoy is the hometown of Charley Demosthenes and of Thomas Catsagians / Thos. Anastasi, who found their way to Middletown many decades ago. Charley operated a neighborhood saloon (residence above) on Clinton Street north of Central Avenue that later became known as the Chili Parlor and was operated by his son-in-law, Stan Tsakeris. ( the building was later demolished to allow for Urban Renewal, which never happened.)” Thomas ran a Kafenion on Clinton St. south of Central Av. A short distance away was the village of Veletler (click on map), the ancestral home of many Middletown Greeks including Gus Christy; the Demetrion brothers, John, George and Tom; Papakirk brothers, Stratton and Fotis; and Ververis brothers, Nick and Demetri. Others from the Mudanya Region include Anna Garofalos, Steve Lazaron, Stratis Petroglou, Constantine Demetrion. |

Mudanya, Brusa, Asia Minor The port city of Mudanya, in the Brusa Region of Asia Minor, was home to Anna Garofalos. In this picture her grandaughters, Diane and Elaine Garvin, explore their grandmother's old neighborhood in 1991. Anna was forced to evacuate with her mother to escape Turkish aggression in August 1922. This picture is Anna and her mother, Fotini Papadoglu, taken at Easter, 1921 in the City of Brusa. (Mudanya residents sometimes took a train for an excursion to the 'big city" of Brusa, the historic capital city of Asia Minor) A comprehensive report on the history of the family's immigration from Mudanya to Middletown has been prepared by Cleo Garofalos Garvin and can be read at a different internet location by searching on 'Mudanya garvinca docstoc' in GOOGLE. Her work is broken up into several topics - just click on a single report - read, then click on the next. HINT: For best view on Docstoc website, click Full Screen (next to Download button) and if ads appear at bottom, click Hide. On the same website is a map of greater Mudanya with names in Greek, which were changed to Turkish names following the evacuation. |

This is Gus Chifos shown tending to candles
as part of his duties as a church councilman. He devoted much of his
day to the church, keeping it clean and orderly. Most days he walked
to and from the church from his home on Henry Avenue (near Jefferson
School, a 2 mile walk) carrying a small brown bag lunch, continuing
this practice into his 90's. If the weather was bad, his wife, Zelma,
would drive him to the church. He died at age 96. His devotion made me
think of him as having many of the qualities of a monk. In his working years, Gus owned the Strand Theatre (See Business Photos Section for story) during the 1920's, then sold it to open a family style restaurant across the street called the Busy Bee. I remember it to be well named, as I observed my uncle, Harry Paraska, working there - he had a part-time job while attending Middletown High School in 1940. Gus and his brother Theodore ran the restaurant together through most of the 30's and 40's. Gus then opened a smaller restaurant by himself across the street from the Liberty Restaurant. |

Photo#2 - Pete's daughter, Georgianna Christine Turlukis, brings a smile to papou George Turlukis' face. c.1951 in front of a Turlukis theater. George Turlukis, his wife Josephine and children Pete and Judy lived at 212 Harrison Street in the 1930's. It was home to my father's cousin Theodore Revelos who returned to Greece in 1929 with his family prior to the Turlukis family. I don't know if they bought the house or rented it. In 1929 my father married my mother and brought her to this country. I think my Dad's and his cousin's boats crisscrossed in the Atlantic. I was born in 1930 in our house at 205 Harrison Street. My brothers, sister and I played with Judy ( I never knew her true name was Sophia) when growing up in the 1930's. After my father died in 1941, I worked at both the Family and State theaters as an usher for George. I remember in later years, after George left Middletown and ran the Rossville Theater in Hamilton, koumpara Yanoula Jonson tried to fix George up with my mother to no avail. George N. Revelos |
