Fulton County Ohio Pioneer Society Bios

Click Here to go to the Biography Name Index
The Obituary /Biographies indexed on this page are transcriptions of
handwritten Obit/Bios that were submitted to the Fulton County Pioneer
Society between the years of 1883 and 1905.  They were read as tributes at
the Pioneer Society meetings which were held twice a year at the courthouse
lawn or at the Fulton County Fairground.  These meetings were all day family
affairs with prayers, singing, entertainment, potluck picnic for lunch and the
reading of these tributes to the early settlers that had passed on.  It was also
their mission to write and preserve the early history of Fulton County and
these written tributes were one way the Pioneer Society accomplished this.

Early History of Fulton County
(by Walter Bates, Fulton County Historical Society)
*click on the highlighted names for additional information*
Joseph Bates (no known relative of mine), was the first white man to buy land and settle in the territory now known as Fulton County. This took place around 1832.

Eli Phillips moved to Phillip's corner about the same time , also known as Seward.

Chesterfield Clemons, - some history and family genealogy
Alanson Briggs and
"Uncle John" Butler settled in Chesterfield Township.

Col. Dresden W.H. Howard settled in Pike Township.
click here for picture of his grave and some history

Rev. Jacob Bender and others settled in Lauber Hill. Other white settlers came in increasing numbers each year.

The FIGY brothers married each married a sister of the Reverend Jacob Bender.

At that time Michigan Territory claimed the land north of the Co. Rd. K as it is known today. The area was located in Lenawee County, Michigan. Lucas County included a large share of present day Fulton County.

During the boundary dispute, Eli Phillips sided with Michigan, he joined the military for the Territory of Michigan. At one point the militia of Michigan and of Ohio were called out in 1835 and met near Seward, but no shots were fired. While Michigan was applying for state-hood, congress in 1836 gave Ohio the strip of disputed land, and Michigan the upper peninsula.

In 1819 Fulton County territory passed under the jurisdiction of Shelby County. By 1820, it was declared "that all that part of the lands lately ceded by the Indians to the United States which lies within this state, is hereby erected into fourteen separate and distinct counties." Thus Williams and Wood Counties included what is today Fulton County. In 1835 Lucas county was organized and took part of the Wood County territory.

There were only a very few people that moved into this section of the Black Swamp in 1833. More came in 1834 and 1835. They kept coming. In 1836 there were enough residents in Swan Creek that they organized as a township. In 1837 Chesterfield and Amboy were organized. In 1838 Clinton and Gorham were organized. German Township followed in 1839. In 1841 Royalton, Pike, Franklin and Fulton were organized. Dover was the last township to be organized in 1842.

The officers of the twelve townships asked the state legislature in 1849 to establish them as a county. To meet the state requirements for size, they had to include part of Williams county, and a row of sections south from Henry County. Early in 1850 the state legislature passed a law establishing the twelve townships as Fulton County.

The two political parties were Whigs and Democrats. By the fall of 1850 each party had presented a slate of officers and at the election all Democrats were elected. The officers were commissioners, auditor, treasurer, and recorder. The county population was 7780 according to the enumeration.

The county commissioners selected a site at the geographical center of the county for the county seat. At the suggestion of Col. Dresden W. H. Howard, the county commissioners named the site, Ottokee, after the Indian Chief and brother of Chief Wauseon.

Much of the above information came from Mikesell's "The County of Fulton"
and Reighard's "Fulton County of Ohio, Vol. 1."
