Ohio Stillborn Death Certificates at Akron, Ohio
Did you know that the certificates for stillborn infants in Ohio were kept separately from regular death certificates from mid 1918-1919 and from 1922-1942? They have been difficult to obtain.
After 1942, stillborns were documented with "fetal death certificates" that combined the information on their birth AND death certificates.
Until recently, Special Collections at Akron-Summit County Public Library did not own these separate stillborn death certificates and had to refer researchers to the Ohio Historical Society to obtain them.
However, ASCPL has recently purchased the Ohio stillborn or fetal death certificate films from December 20, 1908-1953, and they are now available for public use.
Ohio Historical Society Improves Online Death Index
On a recent online visit to the Ohio Historical Society website, http://www.ohiohistory.org/portal/deathindex-p.html, it was a pleasant surprise to find that the online Death Certificate Index at the Archives/Library has been revised.
Firstly, the former 5 separate indexes have been combined into one for 1913-1935 and secondly, another index is now available for the additional years of 1936-1944. Indexes for 1909-1912 and 1945-1953 are available only on microfilm at present (at Ohio Historical Society, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, etc.)
Scanning errors previously present are still visible. However, creative use of the wildcard (*) and/or first names can help you narrow down names especially if you have a year and/or county.
If no research is necessary for a certificate copy order, the cost from OHS is $7.00 per certificate prepaid and 30 days should be allowed for delivery. Visit OHS or Youngstown Musuem of Industry & History to obtain photocopies from film. Akron-Summit or Canton-Stark libraries will also fill email requests at low cost. See their websites.

A researcher's next step might be to consult the Cleveland Necrology File of the Cleveland Public Library, www.cpl.org for a possible paid death notice.
Veteran's grave information might also be obtained from the Cuyahoga County Recorder's Office website at. Veterans' graves in Ohio are/were registered at the County Recorder's office, and an ongoing project in Cuyahoga County in conjunction with the Memorial Day Association of Greater Cleveland has added to these records from other sources. Their registry covers veterans from all wars. Another source of for Veteran's graves is the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
