The initial contribution here is Probate Court Birth records created in compliance with Ohio state legislation initially passed in 1867, "to provide for the registry of births and deaths," and represents a law that placed the responsibility for creating and maintaining records of death and birth into the hands of the probate Court judges. Keep in mind that it was not until 1908 that statewide registration of births and deaths became a reality in Ohio, when a law passed in May of that year established a bureau of vital statistics and provided for the "prompt and permanent registration of all births and deaths occurring within the state of Ohio."
Volunteers at the Cuyahoga County Archives have been working on several record groups. The Birth Indexes in Volumes 1, 5, and 8 were transcribed by volunteers Marge Doaks and Frank Muraski.

Lorraine "Sunny" Newsome, my co-coordinator, passed away recently. Shortly afterwards this site was attacked by a MALWARE. When it was discovered, the site was appropriately shut down by Rootsweb. Non-infected files have been uploaded but in the process some files were lost as they were ones Sunny had worked on and I did not have copies at all or have outdated copies. Please let me know about any missing or broken links. | |
