VENICE, OHIO, CEMETERY
near Venice, Ohio

NOTE from Gene: "The VENICE CEMETERY, by Stroup & Craig has nothing to do with Venice. It is outside of Ross, on the back way to Fairfield, off Colerain Pike, on East Miami River Road, across the Miami River, possibly even in Colerain Township, or Fairfield Township, but definitely not in Ross Township. The Venice (Ross) Cemetery is located smack dab in Ross (Venice) on Sections 33 and 28 of the BC Engineers map year 2001....being located on LAYHIGH ROAD, in Ross, ending about where SCHOOL ROAD intersects/deadends into LAYHIGH ROAD. The Venice Cemetery shown on the BC website is a family graveyard, with a lot of Gilbert ancestors."

NOTE per Nancy Sween
According to the Tomkins Family Website, Clemmons Temple and Eleanor G (GILBERT) ALLCUTT had two children, Eleanor ALLCUTT, born 1887, and Clementine ALLCUTT, born 1896. Disagreeing with the transcription above, this web site lists Eleanor G ALLCUTT's birth - not death - as 1855 in Ohio.

Edwin G. CARPENTER might be the Edwin J. CARPENTER, born 1850, and living in Cincinnati in 1880 and 1910. In 1860 he may have been the 9 year old living in Springfield (Hamilton Co) OH with Samuel S. and Louisa Carpenter.

NOTE per Mark Gilbert
This cemetery is also known as the Richards - Gilbert Cemetery

Alfred West and Elizabeth Gilbert had four total children, two boys and two girls (Warren R., Margaret Adan, Adolph West and Elanor Holmes).

Margaret married Edwin James CARPENTER in 1874.
Elanor married Clemmons T. ALCUTT in 1879.

These two families moved to the Missouri/Kansas area about 1880s. Colonel Alfred West Gilbert, of course, fought in Missouri during the civil war. These families are in those states' 1880 census. Elizabeth (Lizzie) Gilbert and Adolph also spent a short time in the same area. The Alcutt and Carpenter decendents are still in that area (Missouri/Kansas).

The Venice cemetery markings do not make it easy to decipher which individual is with which family.

The following info is from various census listings and info from the book, "The Life and Times of Giles Richards" by Ophia D. Smith.

I do not know the connection of the ALLCUTT and CARPENTER surnames.

The "CHILES" should be the surname "RICHARDS". Children of Giles and E (Eleanor) H (Hankinson) RICHARDS:

  • Amos Lawrence thru Thomas Lloyd are the children of Giles and Eleanor Richards.

Then, the GILBERT surnames:

  • Warren and Adolph W. were sons of Alfred W. and Elizabeth (nee: RICHARDS) GILBERT
  • Sarah M. was the wife of Adolph W. and
  • Edwin C. was a son of Adolph W. and Sarah

  • Alfred West RICHARD is the same person as Alfred West GILBERT. Alfred West or A.W. GILBERT married Giles/Eleanor Richard's daughter, Elizabeth, ca 1848. Alfred is also listed as Col. with the 39 Ohio Inf.
  • Capt Henry Richard is listed twice - he is also listed in the list of children of "Chiles and E. H. Richards".
  • Charles RICHARDS was the brother of Giles Richards. Charles had three sons and one daughter.
  • I am not sure of Copl George G., Co. F entry.
  • Giles Richards *
    • "Elanor H. 1799 - 1864" is the wife of Giles Richards .
    • Elizabeth R. 1821 - 1884 is the eldest child and daugh of Giles and Eleanor Richards - she married A. W. GILBERT.
    • George 1843 - 1912 is a son of Giles Richards - I recall he married a JOHNSON
* Giles - is the husband of Eleanor and father of the listed children under the surname "CHILES". This Giles is the brother of Charles Richards and these brothers are the brother to my line of interest, Amos Adams RICHARDS.

Lydia ROSS is the mother of Eleanor Hankinson nee: Lloyd RICHARDS. Lydia was the second wife of Ogden ROSS.

I'd appreciate any help anyone could offer. I certainly am open to any corrections and clarifications.

Best regards,
Sharon
