Jun. 1958
--- Assigned to a Security Service Officers Intelligence
Course, March AFB, Riverside,
CA.
Apr. 1959 ---
Hq 64tth Air Division, Pepperell AFB, St. John, Newfoundland.
As a Special Security
Officer, a liaison between the Local Commander and Security Service.
Our office was located in a vault, with a vault door as an
entrance.
Side note.
As you will recall, at about the same time that we received our
commissions, the Air Force announced a policy that it wanted all
their officers to have a college degree.
(Thus, the end of OCS) At that
time, I had a year of college, so I began taking courses in the
evening.
Jun. 1960 ---
With the closure of Pepperell AFB, I closed the Special Security
Office there, and was transferred to McChord AFB, Tacoma,
Washington, to oversee the construction of and subsequently operate a
Special Security Office there. During this time, I enrolled in the
Evening Division of the University of Puget Sound and
continued courses. In 1963,
I applied for a Bootstrap Assignment to the
University and completed my Bachelors Degree.
Side note: I was still a Reserve Officer.
I applied for Regular but got no response. So I had
a separation date of December, 1971 to keep my eye on.
Jun. 1964 --- Transferred to 3rd Air
Division, Guam, at another Special Security Office. This
was a two year tour, but since my family was there and liked the
Assignment, we extended for another year.
I was trying to time it so that
when we returned to the States, there would not be enough
time left for another overseas assignment.
Jun. 1967 --- Transferred to Security Service HQ
at Kelly AFB, San Antonio. TX.
With my eye on my approaching retirement, I enrolled in
evening graduate program at St. Marys University.
In the Fall of 1969, I applied for another Bootstrap
Assignment, and in January, 1970, received my
Masters Degree.
Jun. 1970 --- I had never had a remote
assignment and I was sure that I would be tapped for Vietnam.
But then an opening came up for Shemya,
Alaska, and I said Id take it!
So I spent a year at the tip of the Aleutian Islands while the
family remained
in San Antonio.
Dec. 1971 --- Retired.
