The Draped Urn
After the cross, the urn is one of the most commonly used cemetery monuments. The design represents a funeral urn, and is thought to symbolize immortality. Cremation was an early form of preparing the dead for burial. In some cultures, especially in classical times, it was more common than burial. The shape of the container in which the ashes were placed may have taken the form of a simple box or a marble vase, but no matter what it looked like it was called an "urn," derived from the Latin uro, meaning "to burn." As burial became a more common-practice, the urn continued to be closely associated with death. The urn is commonly believed to testify to the death of the body and the dust into which the dead body will change, while the spirit of the departed eternally rests with God. The cloth draping the urn symbolically guarded the ashes. The shroud-draped urn is believed by some to mean that the soul has departed the shrouded body for its trip to heaven. Others say that the drape signifies the last partition between life and death.

The monthly meeting of this Council was held on the 29th instant. Messrs
Teschemaker, Hayes, Lawrie, Hardie, O'Brien, and J. Manchester. In the absence
of the Chairman, Mr J. Manchester was moved to the chair. From the Land Office,
acknowledging receipt of the Council's request to have ten acres on the Otaio
river reserved us a public cemetery, and saying that if the site as show on the
plan was considered suitable the reservation would at once be made.

Our energetic neighbors at St. Andrews still continue to extend their pleasant
little township ; and before many years have come and vanished, we may
quite expect to see a thriving town rise up around the present site. Some three
or four new shops and dwellings have just received their finishing touch, and
were the Pareora estate, adjoining, cut up and sold in suitable allotments and
at suitable prices, St. Andrews would without doubt shortly become second only
to Timaru in importance in South Canterbury. The propriety of the Masonic Hotel,
Mr Brown, has just completed some extensive improvements, rendered necessary I
understand by public exigency, and he opened the new apartments with a ball and
supper on Wednesday eight.
The Otaio cemetery will, I suppose, before this session of
Parliament ceases, be un fait accompli as far as handing the reserve to trustees
goes; but when the reserve may be converted into a "God's Acre " proper and utilised as such, is purely a question of the apathy or energy of the
inhabitants of the district. That persons having business with the Registration
Officer should have to travel as far as Timaru or Waimate, each of those places
being fifteen miles distant, to get their wants supplied, seems, in these
go-ahead times, rather a hardship. Why, in a populous district like Otaio,
including St. Andrews and Makikihi, we should not have a Registrar of Births and
Deaths seems to me to be totally inexplicable, particularly when a very large
portion of the inhabitants of the district have not that easy access to the
railway which fortune has favored the few with. Not, indeed, that an urgent
necessity exist for the exercise of that officer's duties in the death
department, as that would be on libel on our healthy climate ; but, I think, we
might promise him a busy time in chronicling our increases. Seriously, a
movement in this direction would be desirable.

The Otaio Cemetery is a very small public cemetery about 2kms south of St Andrews, just off State Hwy 1, on the left just over the Otaio river bridge. It is over the railway line, through a gate and along a paddock towards the sea. A lovely peaceful and remote location. You can feel and smell the sea breeze from there. There are a few broken headstones, some are indecipherable, and one that has fallen face down. map. From Timaru head south down the Main South Road, pass St. Andrews. Directions. The Otaio Presbyterian Church, built of wood, stood on a site of nearly two acres presented by Mrs Martin, and situated at the corner of the Main South road and Kokika Valley Road. The last service was held at the church on November 11, 1971, after which it was shifted from Otaio to a property in Goldsmith St, Waimate and used as the Waimate Girl Guides Hall. When it was shifted they took the roof off and the tower as it was too high too move. The Waimate guides decided to vacate the building as they did not want to renew their lease as their numbers, varying from 12 to 14, were not sufficient to allow them to maintain the hall or afford the rates and section rental. Waimate District Council bought the Girl Guides Hall and donated it to the Bushtown Committee in 2008 and was shifted to the Bushtown site. The church was next to the Otaio Hall on the main road, across the road from Tennants'. The Martins' farm was on the south side of Woolshed Valley road and is now owned and part of Tennant's dairy farm. No Martins' left now. The road may have been Kohika Valley road once but not now. Mr George Lyall, a native of Kincardineshire, Scotland (1849-1925). Landing in Lyttelton by the “Mermaid”
2 Jan. 1868. He
found employment for a short time in the Rakaia Gorge, and in 1868 came to South
Canterbury, where he entered the service of the New Zealand and Australian Land
Company at their Levels estate. Was
the manager of the Cave Station until he was promoted to the position of manager of
the Pareora Station, in 1891, a property of some 10,000 acres. He was the last manager of the Pareora Estate prior to it
being bought by the Government in 1899 and split up for closer settlement in
early 1900. He was asked to choose some land by the Company [New Zealand &
Australian Land Company] for him to retire on. He chose a location and had a house
built on the terrace overlooking the main road and further out to sea, so Lyall
Road and the district Lyalldale named after him. George was also a Waimate
councilor from 1891 to at least 1903. In 1897 was VP of the Timaru A & P Show.
Mr. Lyall, a public spirited gentleman, was a member of
the Harbour Board, the Waimate Hospital Board and a trustee of the Pareora Domain Board.

Why wasn't this marriage registered?
Now the most interesting thing is that the LYALL - STRONG marriage does not appear on the marriage fiche, the BDM nor the NZSG Marriage CD. The marriage is recorded in the Timaru Herald of the 14th January 1885, ITM and the Pleasant Point Parish Register. It says that it took place in the Presbyterian Church in Timaru, however this marriage is not recorded in that Church's marriage register.

What is the Lyall, Gilmour and Martin connection?
Timaru Herald, 16 September 1889, Page 2
There passed away to rest on Saturday morning a lady well known to the settlers
of the Otaio district, namely, Mrs Gilmour, the, mother of Mrs Andrew Martin, of
Otaio. The deceased lady was 91 years of age, and several of her family are
living in the Waimate district. She retained her faculties unclouded to the
last, and for such a very old lady, had a wonderful memory. She was thrice a
widow, and for many years was the only midwife in the Otaio-Waimate district.
Her funeral takes place at Waimate to-day, and her large circle of friends will
no doubt pay their lost respects to her memory by attending.
If Christina is the mother of Mrs Andrew Martin who was Isabella Thom/pson before she married Andrew in Melbourne then her mother Christina must have married McDonald in Melbourne. Then she married William Gilmour, after arrival.
Christina GILMOUR born 1830, later Mrs Strong, and died 13 Sept. 1919 aged 89 buried in Waimate Cemetery with her husband George Joseph STRONG born 1829 and died 11 March 1891, aged 62. These people are the parents of Mrs George LYALL.
Helen Strong was born in 1864 in Clapham, London, England and came out in 1879
with her mother and lived with her Aunt, Mrs A. Martin, at Otaio. She became a
school teacher and was appointed to the Pleasant Point School. She married
George Lyall in 1885 in Timaru and went to live in Cave until 1890. Mrs Helen Christina LYALL (nee STRONG) was a niece of Mrs Isabella MARTIN
(Mrs Andrew Martin) and
therefore a grand-daughter of Mrs Christina GILMOUR. The Lyall's had nine
children - five sons & four daughters.
Their names are on the St. Andrew's War Memorial and not the Otaio War Memorial
George Lyall lost two son's in the Great War. Angus Lyall came back. Four English daisies are to the right - it was springtime. All photos taken on 13 Nov. 2009. There was one large flat white marble headstone broken, leaning up against the back of the church, this was the only broken headstone in the cemetery. The white marble was in three pieces and the grey inscription is made with flush lead lettering. The letters are chiseled into the stone and small holes are drilled in the groove and then lead is gently tapped into the letters. The gravestone is then polished smooth so the lead letters and the surface of the marble are flush. |

The Lyall plaque used to be on the wall in the Presbyterian Church in St Andrews and until Dec. 2014 at St. Mary's, Esk Valley, lying up against the back of the church. It probably was broken when being removed before the church was closed and pulled down in the 1990s. The Lyall plaque was not leaning against the back of the church in 2005. Plan in 2015 to to repair plaque and mount it in the Lyalldale Hall.

The funeral of the late Miss Alice Stephenson took place on Tuesday afternoon
last, and was largely attended. St. Andrews Church, where the first portion of
the service was conducted, was draped in mourning for the occasion, and the
deceased having been an active member of the choir and also of the parish
Ladies' Guild for many years past, the choir assembled in force to show their
loving respect for the memory of their departed friend, and rendered very
feelingly "Thy Will he done." and at the close of the service "Peace, Perfect
Peace." A large number followed the cortege the Otaio Cemetery, and the vicar,
the Rev. L. Carsley Brady, conducted a solemn service. Much sympathy is extended
to the parents and relatives of the deceased who are old residents in the

Timaru Herald, 8 December 1896, Page 2
The remains of the late Samuel Cague who died on the 2nd inst., were buried on
Saturday last in the Otaio cemetery. The deceased was one of the oldest and most
respected farmers of the St. Andrew's district, and was well and favourably
known to a large circle of friends. Much sympathy is felt for his wife and
family in their sad bereavement. The funeral was very large and representative
and included many from Timaru and Oamaru. The burial service was conducted in a
most impressive manner by the Rev. Mr Finlayson, Presbyterian minister stationed
at St. Andrews. The death cast quite a gloom over the district.

Timaru Herald, 17 August 1896, Page 3 St. Andrews.
The body of the late Andrew McRae was interred in the Otaio public cemetery on
Friday afternoon. The funeral cortege was very large, evidencing the respect in
which the deceased was held by the residents of the district and the sympathy
felt for his untimely death. In the absence of the Rev. Mr Finlayson, the Rev.
Mr Kelly, Presbyterian minister, of Waimate, officiated at the grave. After the
funeral service was over, the mourners inspected the new cemetery, and all
expressed pleasure, and many surprise, that so suitable and convenient a site
had been procured as a public burial ground. The formation of paths find the
planting of suitable trees would greatly add to the appearance of the ground. Mr
McRae's body was the first to be laid in, the new cemetery. The only, drawback
is the approach to the cemetery. The road requires forming and metalling. Had
the unfortunate accident which caused the deceased's death happened during the
late wet weather, it would have been almost impossible to reach the cemetery so
bad were the roads. It is to be hoped that the Council will take early steps to
make the necessary improvements.

HASTIE. On July 31st, 1904, at Springbrook, St. Andrews, Margaret, the beloved
wife of Alexander Hastie; aged 82 years. Private interment at Lower Otaio
cemetery. (W. J. Lister, undertaker.)
Timaru Herald, 13 December 1904, Page 3
The Rev. J. H. J. Chappie, of St Andrews, in conducting the funeral of the late
Alex. Hastie at the Otaio Cemetery yesterday, said at the graveside : —"It was
not usual thing to introduce remarks into the ordinary burial service. At the
same time always I feel when officiating at the funeral of an old pioneer, such
as Alex. Hastie had been, that the time is most opportune (even though the
ordinary rules were broken), to speak a word to the younger people. The occasion
on which an old identity had passed away warranted the remarks. It seemed, a
small thing, perhaps, to stand at the graveside and see the body of an old
colonist laid in the soil, but we must remember, that New Zealand as we see and
enjoy it, is due to the indomitable toil, energy and perseverance of such men
who had laboured among the silver tussocks nigh upon fifty years ago. Personally
I feel it a greater honour to officiate at such a graveside, than if called to
conduct the funeral service of the titled or great, so often wrongly miscalled.
If I mistake not, the aristocracy of God will eventually be found among those
who have helped to lay the base of a righteous nation, and who, without worldly
honours, have almost passed away from the scene of action unthanked or
unnoticed. Alex. Hasite was one of a race that is too fast slipping away, and
whom succeeding generations centuries hence would, if they knew the spot where
such men were buried, almost worship at the shrine of such hallowed ground. We
live too near the time of the pioneers to feel their value. We wonder if the
rising generation show the powers of endeavour and the 'signs of iron in the
blood' that our fathers have shown. We pray it may be so. Let us endeavour to
build well on the foundations that have been laid, always remembering that it is
righteousness that exalteth a nation, not forgetting also that hard toil and
righteousness are (as the history of nations prove) blessings in future years,
let us keep these things in mind and beware of luxury of and effeminacy."
