Town Clerks' Enlistment Rolls of Civil War Veterans

The following information would not be possible without the contribution of Tom Dunne who graciously spent his time copying and transcribing the town clerks' register of civil war veterans, for the communities listed below, from the original files which are available through the New York Archives in Albany.

On May 11, 1865 the Bureau of Military Statistics passed an act (Chapter 690) that required all Counties in the State of New York to have the Town Clerks of each community to prepare a register with a list of all Civil War veterans. These came to be know as the Town Clerks' Registers of Civil War Veterans. We have included here some of the communities in Warren County which have enlistment rolls for their local veterans. Please be aware that not all of the towns in Warren County are included. Some were incomplete (Queensbury), others were hard to read and therefore transcribe (Caldwell, Luzerne, Stoney Creek). Hopefully at some future date those communities can be included here.

All the records can be viewed at either the Warren County Clerks' Office or the New York State Archives. These original records are on microfilm. As with all records, you should verify all the information (names, dates, etc.). To order the microfilm, go to: http://www.archives.nysed.gov/.

These databases contain a great deal of genealogical information, including complete names, birth dates, duty engagements, parents names including mothers maiden name, death dates (for those killed during the war), prisoner of war information and the post office location where the veteran claimed residency upon discharge. All information can vary greatly because of the extent to which the each town clerks supplied information. Some were more detailed than others. Some dates, ie birth dates, may be inaccurate because false information had been given for enrollment age requirements or potential pension claims.
