OBITUARY
DR. CLARENCE JORDAN DIES
MORGAN CENTER, VERMONT
Agri-Mark
and dairymen of the Northeast lost a dedicated leader and friend
on April 22, 1987 when Dr. Clarence Jordan passed away suddenly
at his home in Morgan Center, Vermont, at the age of 69.
Dr. Jordan was truly a man who believed in cooperatives and
the power of unity. He served Agri-Mark and its predecessor
cooperatives since he became a direction of New England Milk
Producers Association in October of 1969. In October of 1971
he became an executive committee member of that organization
and became Secretary and an executive committee member of Yankee
Milk when it was formed in 1972.
When Agri-Mark was formed in July of 1980, Dr. Jordan was elected
both Secretary and to the Executive Committee. He was also the
Membership Committee Chairman for 4 1/2 years.
Dr.
Jordan has been a member of Agri-Mark and its predecessor co-ops
for 24 years; served 18 years as an elected official, including
16 years on the Executive Committee and 15 as Secretary. Dedicated,
involved, and a true champion of causes beneficial to dairymen.
Dr. Jordan was born in East Greenbush, New York on April 10,
1918, and the only son of Frederick and Eleanor (Goewey) Jordan.
He
graduated from the New York State College of Veterinarian Medicine
at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1940. In 1962 he
__ the veterinary practice that he operated for 21 years in
Newport, Vermont, and moved to Morgan Center, Vermont, where
he practiced for 25 years.
Besides being dedicated to the cooperative movement, Dr. Jordan
was also devoted to Vermont, New England, and American Jersey
Cattle Clubs. He often showed his animals at local fairs. He
firmly believed in component pricing of milk and that the Federal
order milk pricing system should reflect milk components such
as protein, lactose, and solids nonfat. He believed in the quality
of milk, not the quantity. Thus he served as Chairman of the
Northeast Nutritional Pricing Committee for the 10 years of
its existence.
Dr. Jordan was active in many organizations. He was on the Board
of Directors of the Regional Cooperative Marketing Agency (RCMA).
He served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Northeast Coordinating
Committee, represented the National Milk Producers Federation
(NMPF) as Chairman of the Mastitis Committee of the U.S. Animal
Health Association, and was a member of the NMPF's Disease Advisory
Committee. He was director of the National Mastitus Council,
a member of the
Vermont Dairy Industry Council, and past President of the Vermont
Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Jordan also served several
terms as a member of the Vermont Board of Veterinary Registration
and Examination, and was a lifetime member of the American Veterinary
Medical Association. He was also the former Chairman of the
Morgan School Board and of the Orleans-Essex Supervisory Board.
He leaves his wife, Doris, three sisters, six children, ten
grandchildren and eight step-grandchildren.
Dr. Clarence Jordan was many things but, above all, he shall
be remembered as a good dairyman and a very special friend of
the Northeast dairy industry. He will be missed by all.
