St. Lawrence county RootsWeb list, as follows: "Mary Jane (Brotherton)Neil
dies. Mary J. Neil died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Cyrena Love in Gleason
St, this village, Friday morning after an illness of some weeks. She was 83 years,
5 months and 10 days. Mrs. Neil who was the widow of William Neil, whose death
occurred in the south during the Civil War, had resided with her daughter, Mrs.
Love for about 12 yrs. She was born in Elbridge, Oswego [actually Onondaga] County,
but had spent a good portion of her long life in various sections of St. Lawrence
County. Mrs. Neil was a woman who had the respect and esteem of all who knew
her and her loss will be mourned by many. She is survived by 2 sons, Sirvillian

1861, Disch. 186_. Nickie Neil lists a pension certificate #8,344, beginining
Feb 1867. Her monthly rate at time the book was published was $8. A GG Grandson
is Bob Love <[email protected] .> I note that a number of people
show Mary Jane Brotherton Neil as the daughter of Otheneil and Betsey Brotherton.
Although Othneil and Betsey had a daughter named Mary Jane, I think she would
have been too young to be the wife of William Neil, since Othneil's first wife,
Mary Sweet, is reported as dying in the 1830-34 period, and Mary Jane Brotherton
Neil was born about 1824. Betsey's Mary Jane and 3 siblings are listed in 1843
in Otheniel's will as being the children of Betsey, and all minors. Since the
will specifically lists these four as Betsey's children, it can be presumed that
the others listed are not hers. Also listed in the estate papers is another Mary,
presumably daughter of a deceased son, living in Elbridge, NY, along with 3
siblings. The birth dates of two of those siblings, Niram [1827] and Nathan [Mar
1832], are known close enough to justify an 1821/4 birth date for Mary Jane,
who I believe is the one who became William Neil's wife. An examination of her
death record might resolve this question. See also the discussions under Enoch
and Otheniel on this family. Mary Jane Brotherton and William J. Neil were
married on 10 Feb 1845 in Antwerp, Jefferson, NY. This date and location
can be found in civil war pension papers, signed by Mary Jane. Family tradition
says there were 12 children. They appeared in the census in 1855 in Antwerp,
Jefferson, NY. William Neil, 33, born Jefferson county, Antwerp resident
33 yrs.; Mary, wife, 28, born Onondaga county, resident 11 yrs.; Robert, 7,M;
Serena, 6, F; Civillian, 5, M; Andrew, 3, M; Sarah, 8/12, F; all children born
Jefferson county, residents of Antwerp entire lives. [Nickie Neil transcription]
