260. Carl E. Moore was born on 29 May 1893 in Fowler, St. Lawrence, NY. He died on 6 Sep 1971 in Watertown, Jefferson, NY. His obituary appeared on 8 Sep 1971 in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson, NY, as follows: "C. E. Moore Rites Set. Gouverneur -- The funeral for Carl E. Moore, 78, Spragueville, who died Monday in Mercy Hospital, Watertown, will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Sprague Funeral Home, Rev. Donald K. Dodds, pastor of the Antwerp and Spragueville United Methodist Churches, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery with military honors.
"Friends may call at the funeral home this evening.
"Survivors include two sons, Roger, Inglewood, Calif., and Leon, Riverview, Fla.; two daughters, Mrs. Clyde (Gerry) Westcott, North Syracuse, Mrs. James (Marjorie) Brown, Russell, Kan.; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a brother, Floyd, Fowler,
"Born in the Town of Fowler May 29, 1893, son of George S. and Margaret Love Moore, he attended school at Fowler and Gouverneur and after working on farms in the Fowler vicinity joined the American Express Co. He served in World War I with the 11th cavalry, stationed at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.
"Returning to Gouverneur, he worked on farms and re-joined the express company, working from 1924 to 1930. Mr. Moore was appointed to the village police force in 1943 and retired in 1953. He moved to Spragueville in 1956 where he lived until entering a Watertown nursing home in June. He was transferred to Mercy Hospital after suffering a stroke.
"Mr. Moore's marriage to Iva Hutt at Fort Oglethorpe ended in divorce in 1930. He married Helen V. Smith July 10, 1936 in Erie, Pa. Mrs. Moore died in June.
"A popular member of the police force, Mr. Moore is credited with many services to youth of the community. In 1944, he aided the formation of a committee to organize a west side playground and to raise funds. The playground became a reality in 1946 and, under the instigation of Mr. Moore, the village youth commission was started to set up a supervised playground program. He served on the commission for several years and was chairman in 1950.
"In 1948, he reorganized Troop 20, B.S.A., under the sponsorship of the American Legion post, of which he was a member. He also organized the American Legion Band." He was buried in Riverside cemetery, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY.

Carl E. Moore and Helen V. Smith were married on 10 Jul 1936 in Erie, ___, Pennsylvania. Helen V. Smith (daughter of Leslie Smith and Georgianna Furness) was born on 26 Dec 1900 in Morristown, St Lawrence, NY. She died on 25 Jun 1971 in Watertown, Jefferson, NY. Her obituary appeared on 26 Jun 1971 in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson, NY, as follows: “Mrs. Carl Moore Dies. Gouverneur - Mrs. Helen V. Moore, 70, Spragueville, wife of Carl Moore, died at 1:45 P.M. Friday in the House of the Good Samaritan, Watertown, where she had been a patient for a month. She had been ill 13 years from arthritis.
“The funeral will be Monday at 1:30 p.m. at Sprague Funeral Home, Gouverneur, with Rev. Donald K. Dodds, pastor, Antwerp and Spragueville United Methodist Churches, officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home tonight and Sunday afternoon and evening.
“Surviving besides her husband are two step-sons, Roger, Inglewood, Calif.; Leon, Riverview, Fla.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Clyde (Gerry) Wescott, N. Syracuse; Mrs. James (Marjorie) Brown, Russell, Kan.; ten step-grandchildren and five step-great grandchildren.
“Born in the Town of Morristown Dec. 26, 1900, daughter of Leslie and Georgiana Furness Smith, she attended school at Ogdensburg and Morristown. She then traveled extensively in the West. After working in Colorado as a waitress, she returned to this section in 1932 and was employed in an Ogdensburg restaurant.
“She was married to Carl Moore in Pennsylvania on July 10, 1936. They lived in Florida until 1939 when they came to Gouverneur. Mr. Moore was a member of the local police department and Mrs. Moore was a cook at Smith's hotel for 17 years. They later farmed in Fowler and moved to Spragueville in 1956.” She was buried in Riverside cemetery, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY.
