Gouverneur -- Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Rice, 79, Gouverneur, R.D. 4, widow of Allen Rice, died Thursday night in Gouverneur Edward John Noble Hospital where she had been a patient four weeks.
"The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Burr-Green Funeral Home, Rev. Edward F. Caldwell, rector, Trinity Episcopal Church, officiating. burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
"Friends may call at the funeral home this afternoon and tonight.
"Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Louise) Hayden, Gouverneur; three sons, Robert, Richville, Charles and Wilbur (Dick), both of Gouverneur; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
"Born at Gouverneur Aug. 10, 1893, daughter of Theodore and Mary Elizabeth Manning Best, she attended school at Gouverneur, worked for the International Lace Co. and as a private practical nurse and Midwife.
"She was married to Allen Rice in 1912. They operated farms until his death in 1957." She was buried in Riverside cemetery, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY.

Allan Rice (son of John Rice and Martha Hopper) was born on 22 Nov 1888 in Chesterville, Ontario, Canada. He died on 16 Feb 1956 in Fowler, St. Lawrence, NY. His obituary appeared on 17 Feb 1956 in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson, NY, as follows: "Allan Rice, 67, Long Ill, dead. Gouverneur, Feb. 17.-- Allan rice, 67, retired Gouverneur area farmer, died yesterday of a heart attack at the home of a son, Leon Rice, Hull road, Hailesboro. Mr. Rice had been in poor health two years.
"The funeral will be Saturday morning at 10 on the Hull road farm. Rev. Richard K. Janks, rector of Trinity Episcopal church, will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.
"Mr. Rice is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary B. Rice; four sons, Leon Rice, Hailesboro; Robert Rice, Richville, and Charles and Wilbur Rice, town of Gouverneur; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Hayden, Hermon; one brother, George Rice, Vernon, and ten grandchildren.
"Mr. Rice was born at Chesterville, Ont., Nov. 22, 1888, the son of John and Martha Hopper Rice. He married Miss Mary E. Bassett at the Methodist parsonage, Gouverneur, Dec. 30, 1910, with Rev. John Wilds, pastor of the First Methodist church, Gouverneur, officiating.
"Mr. Rice farmed all his adult life around Gouverneur." He was buried in Riverside cemetery, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. Also seen as Allen. Mary Elizabeth Bassett and Allan Rice had the following children:

Raymond Stewart Rice was born on 30 Mar 1920 in Carthage, Jefferson, NY. He died on 30 Sep 1933 in Hermon, St. Lawrence, NY. His obituary appeared on 2 Oct 1933 in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson, NY, as follows: "Boy, 13, Killed While Hunting. Fatally Wounded When He Fell On His Gun. Raymond Rice, West Hermon. Boy Dies in Ambulance on Way to the Hepburn Hospital--.22 Calibre Bullet Struck Boy in Right Chest and Passed Through Body.
"Ogdensburg, Oct. 2.--Raymond Rice, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Allen Rice of West Hermon, was fatally shot near his home Saturday evening. It was said he fell on his gun while returning from a squirrel hunt.
"Dr. F. W. Delmage was called and started bringing the boy to the Hepburn hospital in Ogdensburg but he died in the ambulance a few miles from Hermon. The body was taken back to the Green undertaking rooms in Hermon.
"Dr. L. F. Cleland of Lisbon, coroner, was called and after conducting an inquiry, gave a verdict of accidental death. Before he died the wounded boy told his parents and brothers that he had fallen on the gun. He was accompanied at the time of the accident by his younger brother, aged 6. He hurried home and two older brothers went to the field and carried Raymond home.
"The gun was a .22 calibre. The bullet struck his right breast and passed through his body.
"The boy was born March 30, 1920, at Carthage, son of Allen and Mary Bassett Rice. The family now resides on the Bert Richards farm at West Hermon.
"Besides his parents he is survived by one sister, Mary Louise, and four brothers, Leon, Robert, Charles and Wilbur.
"The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 from the home, Rev. M. R. French officiating. Interment will be at Riverside cemetery." He was buried in Riverside cemetery, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY.
