appeared on 27 May 1955 in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson,
NY, as follows: "Widow of Smith Johnston Dead. Redwood, May
27.--Mrs. Clara Manning Johnston, 67, widow of Smith Johnston, died Thursday
at 11 a.m. at the home of her sister, Miss Kate Manning, Theresa, with whom she
had lived for the past two years. Death was attributed to pneumonia. she had
been in poor health for the past six years.
"Funeral services will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Quincer funeral
home, Redwood. Rev. Myron E. Van Ornum, pastor of the Theresa Methodist church,
will officiate. Burial will be in Redwood cemetery. Friends may call Friday and
Saturday from 3 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
"Surviving are three brothers, Fred Manning, Gouverneur; Chester Manning,
Theresa, and Carl Manning, Redwood, and three sisters, Mrs. Julia Foster, Plessis;
Miss Agnes Johnston, Redwood, and Miss Kate Manning, Theresa.
"Mrs. Johnston was born Feb. 17, 1888, at River road, near Theresa, a
daughter of Charles Day and Caroline Bucker Manning. On Feb. 17, 1908, she was
married to Smith Johnston, at the Theresa Presbyterian church. Rev. Hugh Craig
officiated. Mr. Johnston was employed as a painter and carpenter. The couple
lived in the Redwood area most of their lives. Mr. Johnston died Jan. 31, 1950.
"Mrs. Johnston attended the Methodist church." She was buried in
Redwood cemetery, Redwood, Jefferson, NY. Clara B. Manning and Smith
H. Johnston were married on 17 Feb 1908 in Theresa, Jefferson, NY.
Smith H. Johnston (son of Joseph W. Johnston and
Caroline Smith) was born on 30 Sep 1878 in Waddington, St Lawrence, NY.
He died on 31 Jan 1950 in Redwood, Jefferson, NY. His obituary appeared
on 1 Feb 1950 in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson, NY, as follows:
"S. H. Johnston, Redwood, Dies. Funeral Services for Waddington Native,
71, Slated For Friday. Redwood, Feb. 1.--Smith H. Johnston, 71, of Redwood, died
suddenly yesterday at 2 p.m. from a heart attack at his home on Cottage street.
"Funeral services will be held at the home Friday afternoon at 2. Burial
will be in the Redwood cemetery. He is survived by his wife the former Miss Clara
Manning of Rossie; two brothers, Joseph of Redwood and Walter of Rossie; three
sisters, Mrs. Etta Pickert of San Jose, Calif., Mrs. Fred (Jennie) Swan of Alexandria
Bay, Mrs. Arthur (Esther) Seaker of Gouverneur; and several nephews and nieces.
"Mr. Johnston was born Sept. 30, 1878, at Waddington, a son of Joseph
W. and Caroline Smith Johnston. He obtained his education in public schools.
He made cheese for a few years and later he and his father bought a farm on Millsite
lake road and he farmed for a number of years. He came to Redwood in about 1920,
worked at the carpenter trade and rented a number of his camps on the shore of
Millsite Lake.
"On Feb. 17, 1908, he married Miss Clara Manning at Theresa, Rev. Hugh
Craig, pastor of the Presbyterian church officiating." He was buried in
Redwood cemetery, Redwood, Jefferson, NY. |
