28. Nathan Brotherton appeared in the census 1890 Veterans in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. #462/514 Brotherton, Nathan. Co. C, 10th NYHA. In the same household, Nancy M., widow of Manery, Alexander, musician, "did not return -- supposed dead." A newspaper clipping says "Last week Special County Judge Johnson committed Mrs. Nancy Brotherton of this village to the Insane Asylum at Point Airy. The examination was made by Drs. F. F. Drury and Close." [SLCHA SB#9, p. 83, abt 1897] He was born about Mar 1832. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Antwerp, Jefferson, NY. Page 185, laborer, in the household of Rufus King He died on 5 Jun 1903 in Fullerville, St. Lawrence, NY. Brotherton, Nathan, 5 Jun 1903, Fullerville, NY, age 71 yrs, 3 mo.; cause: apoplectic shock; bill paid by Mrs. Brotherton, Alvin Brotherton. [Sprague funeral home records]. "The funeral services of Nathan Brotherton, an aged resident of the locality, were held from the late home in Fullerville Sunday morning, the interment being made in Riverside cemetery. Brotherton had been in poor health for a long time previous to his death. He was a veteran of the civil war, having enlisted in Co. C, 12th regiment, soon after the war began. He was later transferred to Co. M, 16th New York volunteer infantry. He is survived by several children." [Watertown Daily Times, 6/2/1903) He was buried in Riverside cemetery, Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. He served in the military during the civil war, in Co. C., 12th NY HA.[also seen as 10th?] & Co. M, 16th, NYVI. Nathan Brotherton's death record in Fowler should be checked. This may be the "N. Brotherton" recorded as voting at the Annual Town Meeting in Macomb, NY, 14 Feb 1854.

In his pension papers Nathan says he married one of his first two wives in Rossie, and the other in Onondaga county. In what is apparently an error, one declaration in Nathan's pension file says that "Riley L. Spicer", age 52, was the same person as Nathan Brotherton.

Nathan Brotherton and Susan Stevenson appeared in the census 1855 - New York in Elbridge, Onondaga, NY. 2nd E.D., page 37, #313/349. N. Brotherton, 23, laborer, born Oneida county; Susan, wife, 19, born Onondaga Co.; Sarah Jane, daughter, 10/12, born Onondaga county. They appeared in the census in 1860 in Antwerp, Jefferson, NY. P. 395. #621/636. Nathan, 28; Susan, 24; Sarah Jane, 5; George, 4; Edwin, 2; May, 3/12.
They were married about 1853. The conflict between the reported maternity of Alvin and William and the death date of Susan Stevenson needs to be reconciled. Susan Stevenson was born about 1836. She died on 18 Jul 1876 in Clyde, ___, NY. Also seen as Stevenson or Stivers. Nathan Brotherton and Susan Stevenson had the following children:

Sarah Jane Brotherton was born about 1854/55. She died before 1898. Not listed among Nathan's living children in pension papers.

George Brotherton was born about 1856. He died before 1898. Not listed among Nathan's living children in pension papers. Possibly the George Henry Brotherton, age 33 [possibly should be 23?], and wife, Lizzie Brotherton, age 20, on page 485A, Glen Arbor, Leelanau, MI, 1880?

Mary Brotherton was born in 1860. She died before 1898. Not listed among Nathan's living children in pension papers.

Charles Brotherton was born on 20 Aug 1872 in Antwerp, Jefferson, NY. Birth year of 1864 derived from 1880 census. Nathan's pension papers list Charles's birth as 1872. He died after 1880.

Nathan Brotherton and Josephine Beers were married about 1878. Josephine was previously married to a Washburn. They appeared in the census in 1880 in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. Page 396D. Nathan, 47, b. NY; Josephine, wife, 33, b. NY; Nettie J., dau., 14, b. NY; Eliza E., dau., 12, b. NY; William C., son, 6, b. NY; Alvin W., son, 4, b. NY; Charlotte J., dau., 1 month, b. NY; Charles, son, 16, b. NY. [LDS transcription]. Nettie and Eliza were actually WASHBURNs, Josephine's daughters by her first marriage; Charles was Nathan's son by his first marriage. The conflict between the reported maternity of Alvin and William and the death date of Susan Stevenson [1876] needs to be reconciled.
Josephine Beers (daughter of Levi Beers and Charlotte ___) was born in 1846/47. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Rossie, St. Lawrence, NY. Josephine is with her parents and siblings in 1860, in Rossie, page 748. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Rossie, St. Lawrence, NY. Page 170B, line 35, #36/32, Washburn Josephine, 22, F, W, Keeping House New York; Nettie, 4, F, W, New York; Eliza, 2, F, W, New York. Josephine and daughters are on the same page as her parents.
She died on 28 Apr 1884 in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. "BROTHERTON. -- In Gouverneur, N.Y., April 28th, 1884, Mrs. Josephine Brotherton of consumption aged 37 years." She was buried in Riverside cemetery, Rossie, St. Lawrence, NY. Headstone says "Bwers". Daughter's obit gives her name as Charlotte Josephine. Surname looks like Beers in Nathan's pension papers, which is closer to what is in William's and Charles's obituaries, rather than Bowers. Nathan Brotherton and Josephine Beers had the following children:

Adelbert "Delbert" Brotherton was born about 1882. He died on 4 Aug 1893 in Gouverneur, St. Lawrence, NY. [8/9/1893] "A drowning accident, the only one we have had to chronicle in this place this season occurred at the sorting boom late Friday morning. Delbert Brotherton, aged 11 years, and a Knowlton boy were in bathing, when the Brotherton boy got beyond his depth and as he could not swim he was drowned. Nathan Brotherton and Agnes ___ were married on 11 May 1897 in Carthage, Jefferson, NY. Married at the Methodist parsonage, by Rev. Brown. Agnes was previously married to a Charles Belden, who died in 1894. Agnes ___ was born.
