"Ex-Millwright Leslie A. Brotherton, 80, Dies. Carthage--Leslie A. Brotherton,
80, of 222 State St., formerly of Deferiet, a retired millwright, died this morning
in Carthage Area Hospital, where he had been a patient one week.
"The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the McGraw Funeral Home with
Rev. Glenn H. Poppleton, pator of First United Methodist Church of Carthage,
officiating. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery.
"Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral
home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
"Surviving are his wife, Bernice; a son, Thomas L., Carthage; a daughter,
Mrs. David (Nancy) Howard, allegany; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren;
two brothers, Claude, Ohio, and Fred, Oswego, and several nieces and nephews.
"Two brothers and three sisters died before him.
"Born in Carthage on May 12, 1907, a son of William and Bertha Elliott
Brotherton, he attended school on the Martin Street Road in Carthage.
"He married Bernice Stevens on June 18, 1932, in the rectory of St. James
Church, with Rev. Patrick O'Shea officiating.
"The couple lived in Deferiet for more than 40 years before moving to
Carthage in 1980. Mr. Brotherton was employed as a millwright at the St. Regis
Paper Co., Deferiet, for 47 years before retiring in June 1969.
"He was a past member of the Deferiet Volunteer Fire Department."
He was buried in St. James Catholic Church, Carthage, Jefferson, NY. Leslie
A. Brotherton and Bernice Stevens were married on 18 Jun 1932 in Carthage, Jefferson,
NY. "Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Brotherton. 50 Years. Carthage -- Mr.
and Mrs. Leslie Brotherton, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary today
at the home of their son, Thomas.
"Mr. Brotherton, son of William and Bertha Brotherton, and Miss Bernice
Stevens, daughter of the late Henry and Margaret Stevens, were married June 18,
1932 in the rectory of St. James Church with Rev. Patrick O'Shea, officiating.
"Attendants were Fred and Cora Townsend-Brotherton, brother and sister-in-law
of the bridegroom.
"Mr. Brotherton worked for St. Regis Paper Co., Deferiet for 42 years
before retiring in 1969.
"The couple are past members of the Deferiet Senior Citizens and the
Long Falls Senior Citizens. Mrs. Brotherton is a member of the Sunday Night Women's
Bowling League.
"They have two children, Thomas, Martin Street Road, and Mrs. Nancy Howard,
Allegany, and five grandchildren, Thomas and Debbie Brotherton, Lesley, Michelle

Stevens (daughter of Henry Stevens and Margaret Arquette) was born on 24
Apr 1910 in Ft. Covington, Franklin, NY. She died on 9 Jun 1995 in
Carthage, Jefferson, NY. Her obituary appeared on 11 Jun 1995 in
the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson, NY, as follows:
"Bernice Stevens Brotherton Dies At Age 85. Carthage. "Bernice M.
Brotherton, 85, of 222 State St., a Fort Covington native, died Friday evening
in the skilled nursing unit of Carthage Area Hospital. She had been ill for four
months.
"A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday in St. Rita's of Casia Church,
Deferiet, with the Rev. James Beinlich officiating. Burial will be in St. James
Cemetery.
"Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral
Home, where the Rosary will be recited at 8:30 p.m. Donations may be made to
the American Heart Association.
"Surviving are a son, Thomas L., Carthage; a daughter, Mrs. David (Nancy)
Howard, Alleghany; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a brother,
Carl Stevens, Lowville; and several nieces and nephews.
"Two brothers, Howard and Hermon Stevens, and two sisters, Loretta Swift
and Dorothy LaForest, died before her.
"Born April 24, 1910, in Fort Covington, a daughter of Henry and Margaret
Arquette Stevens, she attended Carthage schools.
"She married Leslie A. Brotherton June 18, 1932, in the rectory of St.
James Church with the Rev. Patrick O'Shea officiating.
"Mr. Brotherton was a millwright at St. Regis Paper Co. for 47 years
and he and his wife lived in Deferiet for many years. He died Dec. 8, 1987.
"Mrs. Brotherton was a homemaker."
She was buried in St. James cemetery, Carthage, Jefferson, NY.
