346. Milton Horace Brotherton was born on 10 Feb 1912 in Edwards, St. Lawrence, NY. He died on 29 Oct 1948 in Theresa, Jefferson, NY. Possibly another town -- on the Watertown-Theresa road. The Ira Johnson genealogy has the year as 1947. His obituary appeared on 30 Oct 1948 in the Watertown Daily Times of Watertown, Jefferson, NY, as follows: "Man, 36, Meets Death When School Bus and Car Meet; 20 Escape. Milton H. Brotherton, Naumburg Farmer, Driver of Car, Killed Instantly. A motorist was killed instantly in a car-school bus accident Friday afternoon on the Watertown-Theresa highway, while 20 other persons, including 19 pupils of the Brownville-Glen Park Central School, escaped injury.
"Milton Horace Brotherton, 36, a farmer of Naumburg, died instantly. He had a fractured skull, broken neck and other injuries.
"The school bus involved, operated by George A. Bierman, 61, R.D. 4, city, had a damaged left front fender. Brotherton was killed after the rear of his car struck the bus fender, skidded down the road 138 feet and spun around, leaving the highway and striking a tree ten feet from the west edge on its left side.
"A wrecker had to be summoned to the scene to pry the car loose from the tree, open its doors and tear out the front seat which wedged the dead man's body on the floor of the car between the base of the seat and the steering column.
"Sheriff Brayton E. Peck headed a sheriff's office detail in the investigation of the accident. Aiding him were: Deputy Sheriffs Carlton DeShaw, Orville Humphrey, James Hagen and Undersheriff L. Raymond Johndrow.
"Bierman, the bus driver, told investigators that he was driving north along the road near the Ganter farm, four and one half miles north of this city, when the accident occurred.
"He said he observed the Brotherton car approaching at a rapid rate of speed and as it neared the bus, he said, it started swaying from side to side.
"Bierman said that as the car drew near the bus, it suddenly veered away, the car's rear end striking the left front fender of the vehicle carrying the children.
"'Then the car skidded down the road, left the pavement and struck the tree,' Bierman said.
"After the Brotherton car struck the tree, it burst into flames. Bierman grabbed the fire extinguisher in the bus, ran to the scene and put out the blaze before it had gained too much headway.
"The bus driver stopped his vehicle at the scene pending the sheriff's office investigation. Parents of five of the children on the bus came along meanwhile and took their children home with them. The rest remained on the bus until the driver was able to continue his journey.
"Sheriff Peck said that a witness to the fatal accident, Leon Slate, Plessis, corroborated the bus driver's description of the accident. Slate said that the Brotherton car was coming fast but that he could not attempt to estimate its speed when the accident occurred. He said the bus was being driven at a moderate speed.
"District Attorney Milton A. Wiltse was notified and he went to the scene of the accident to aid in the investigation. Dr. Guido Gian Franceschi, city, was summoned to the scene and he acted as coroner's physician. Dr. Franceschi pronounced Brotherton dead.
"District Attorney Wiltse said he may hold an inquest in the near future.
"The district attorney authorized removal of the body to the Guilfoyle funeral home in this city.
"Children aboard the bus who escaped injury were: Paul Brenon, 7; Bert Miller, 11; John Shawcross, 9; Daniel Barrett, 10; Melville Sayles, 10; Ronald Jolly, 10; Lloyd Fraser, 16; Marjorie Fraser; Evelyn Fraser, 8; Clifford Fraser, 18; David Marcell, 11, and Arthur Pond, 13, all of R.D. 4, city; Laura White, 6; and Rene White, 12, of R. D. 1, city.
"The Fraser children are brothers and sisters.
"Other R. D. 4 children whose parents took them home after the accident were: Richard Dorr, Janis Dorr, Rose Shoen, Helen Ackerman, and Patricia Ackerman.
"Mr. Brotherton was born in Edwards Feb. 10, 1912, a son of Horace and Blanche Ward Brotherton. His father is dead and his mother, Mrs. Blanche Cunningham, Port Byron, married again.
"Funeral services will be held at the Brotherton home Tuesday afternoon at 1, with Rev. H. Curtis Wheedon, rector of Grace Episcopal church, Carthage, officiating. Interment will be in the Hillside cemetery, Antwerp.
"Mr. Brotherton was married to Miss Elizabeth Hill in this city Dec. 17, 1936. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Edgar O. Spaven, former pastor of the Bethany Methodist church. Mr. Brotherton had resided on his farm on the Naumburg road for the past eight years. He was a member of the Riverbank Grange.
"Mrs. Brotherton said today that her husband left about 10 Friday morning to visit his brother, Merton, in Philadelphia. He was en route home when the fatality occurred.
"Survivors, in addition to the wife, mother and brother, in Philadelphia are a daughter, Janice Marie Brotherton, 8; another brother, Melvin Brotherton, Evans Mills, and a sister, Mrs. Stanley Belmore, Gouverneur."
